About This Role
Join a team of ten perfusionists to provide clinical services for cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), CPB standbys, ECMO for slide tracheoplasties, ATS, Erydel, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), research lab support, cardiac ECMO initiations and troubleshooting, intra and inter-hospital ECMO transports, liver transplants, cath lab standbys, and VAD implants.
Salary Range$141,232 - $225,000
Job Responsibilities- Procedures – Design and assemble extracorporeal circuits and equipment for cardiopulmonary bypass, left heart bypass, VAD, ECMO, HIPEC, veno‑venous bypass, intra‑aortic balloon pumps, and autologous blood recovery equipment. Maintain patient parameters per guidelines and physician orders during CPB, MCS and autologous blood recovery procedures. Administer medications, anesthetic agents and blood products under the orders and supervision of a physician. Perform chemistry, blood gas, co‑oximetry, and activated clotting time tests.
Review all patient data prior to intervention to determine appropriate circuitry and equipment applications; collaborate with attending surgeon on the selection of circuit components and special patient requirements. Effectively communicate with cardiac surgeon, anesthesiologist, other perfusionists, and operating room personnel. Provide age‑appropriate care to patients from birth through 21 years and adult patients with congenital heart disease or MCS. - Documentation – Responsible for accurate and timely perfusion case data entry into perfusion database. Maintain accurate documentation of perfusion cases and departmental functions for efficient department operation.
- Inventory – Familiar with entire disposable and cryogenic tissue inventory management process; includes inventory management, ordering, shipment tracking, receiving and tissue handling.
- Operations – Operate, maintain, calibrate and perform quality control testing on all operating room point‑of‑care laboratory equipment as per institutional protocols and CLIA requirements. Coordinate with the Clinical Engineering department for preventative maintenance and routine equipment checks of all perfusion related equipment. Maintain and monitor cryogenic storage unit for human tissue grafts. Participate in evaluating new perfusion equipment (i.e., hardware and disposables) to determine operational characteristics and therapeutic value.
- Training & Education – Participate in clinical educational programs and continuing educational programs with physicians and other Perfusionists. Maintain education in the field of perfusion through continuing education, literature, and seminars and apply this knowledge to the care of patients. Implement this knowledge into the Cardiothoracic Surgery department.
- Bachelor's degree in related field. May require clinical license, certification or training.
- Preferred:
Experience with pediatric CPB, ECMO/MCS devices. AmSECTs Fellow of Pediatric Perfusion. - Certified or eligible to sit for the certification exam by the ABCP or must demonstrate equivalent qualifications and competency.
- Must attain certification within the first 18 months of employment.
- Formally educated and proficient in the operation of all extracorporeal life support system.
