Summary
This Medical Care Transportation Technician ‑ Paramedic position is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs ‑ Veterans Health Administration (VHA) ‑ Veterans Transportation Services (VTS) ‑ Emergency Ambulance Service (EAS) at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center (VAMC) located with an emergency room. The role assists in patient care within the scope of a paramedic and transports patients according to facility needs.

Minimum qualification requirement ‑ The following are minimum requirements for appointment as a Medical Care Transportation Technician ‑ Paramedic ‑ GS-0640-09 in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and all applicants must meet them.
Specialized experience (GS‑09):
Applicants must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS‑08) in the Federal Service that is directly related to the work of the position. Experience must include applying knowledge of body systems, responding to emergencies, transporting patients, using communication equipment, and operating emergency or patient transport vehicles. Substitution of education for experience:
Applicants may substitute two full years of graduate education or a Master's degree when directly related to the position, provided it was obtained in an accredited institution. Applicants may also combine education and experience, with an unofficial transcript required. English language proficiency, NREMT paramedic license, Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications, and a current state driver’s license are required.

The Cincinnati VA Medical Center (CVAMC) is a two‑division campus located in Cincinnati, OH and Fort Thomas, KY serving 15 counties in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana with six Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Bellevue, KY;
Florence, KY;
Lawrenceburg, IN;
Hamilton, OH;
Clermont County, OH; and Georgetown, OH. The CVAMC also supports two off‑main‑campus locations in the Cincinnati area via an Eye Center and Mental Health Outreach Community Division.
- Duties will include – but may not be limited to the following:
Conducts patient assessments – assesses severity of illness/injury and identifies life‑threatening problems - Determines/prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance
- Paramedics shall perform patient triage – take and record patient’s vital signs as needed
- Performs physical examinations and obtains patient history – assesses status of the patient’s neurological system, cardiovascular system, circulatory system, skeletal system, orthopedic system, motor and sensory skills, and level of consciousness
- Administers basic life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards – may include providing CPR and/or drug treatments
- Performs invasive and non‑invasive procedures on patients with life‑threatening and non‑life‑threatening conditions
- Operates or utilizes various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment – tools and supplies may include ambulance, extrication tools, blood pressure cuff, cardiac monitor, ventilator, laryngoscope, glucose monitor, oxygen terminal, pulse oximetry monitor, medical supplies, radio communications equipment, and general office equipment
- Provides treatment as prescribed in protocol
- Makes modifications to the protocol – if necessary – within prescribed limits
- When not responding to Emergency Response Team calls, the incumbent may serve in a technical support capacity to the Emergency Department
- Selects the most efficient route to and from sites – taking into consideration traffic patterns, health facility locations, etc.
