Responsibilities

  • Departmental Support:
    Conduct, direct or assist in special projects, evaluations, experiments or research. Participate in scheduled cross‑trained rotations, demonstrate continued competency in various sections of the Clinical Laboratory, and contribute to organizational performance by recommending improvement activities, performing new procedures, collecting data, and providing input to department discussions. Establish job requirements and goals; perform duties at the desired level of competency.
  • Technical Skills and Knowledge:
    Possess appropriate skills and theory to independently perform a variety of laboratory tests. Operate instruments; perform checks, calibrations, preventive maintenance, and basic troubleshooting from written guidelines. Perform and report quality control procedures, identify Q.C. failures, correct malfunctions. Prepare samples for analysis, store and preserve specimens, prepare reagents, monitor supply inventories, receive and stock supplies, perform registration and sample collection as required.

    Perform routine procedures within the discipline, including data collection affecting patient care decisions. Assist with development and updating of procedures. Train bench personnel and students in bench procedures once proficient. Serve as key operator for testing systems, coordinate quality control, maintenance, and inventory management; may serve as superuser for the laboratory information system.
  • Customer Service:
    Maintain/manage strong working relationships with clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders. Respond quickly and effectively to requests. Identify, understand, and meet customer needs and expectations; communicate relevant information to stakeholders.
  • Professional Development:
    Maintain currency in the field, including licensure/certification, through continuing education, conferences, meetings, in‑services, networking, literature. Attend all mandatory CCHMC training sessions. Apply learned skills and knowledge to one’s own work, department, and organization. Assume responsibility for professional growth; may participate in internal/external committees, agencies, councils, or activities.
  • Quality and Accountability:
    Perform accurate, precise work with a consistently low error rate. Maintain awareness of sectional needs and contribute skills to meet those needs. Assume responsibility for one’s own actions; complete tasks. Comply with policies, guidelines, regulations, and accreditation standards; document compliance as necessary. Maintain compliance with CCHMC Core Standards and code of ethics. Ensure work areas are organized, safe, accessible, effective, and efficient for employees, patients and families.

    Participate in accreditation activities through conducting standards assessments and evaluations for internal and external inspections.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical or biological science OR Associate’s degree in related science.
  • 2+ years of experience with Bachelor’s degree; 4+ years with Associate’s degree.
  • Any required license, certification, or registration.
  • Preferred:
    Certified MLS or MLT through a national certifying agency.
