At UC Health, we strive for innovation and world-class care. Primary responsibility involves performance of specific tasks as a scrub technologist in an operating room. Assists with the maintenance of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains positive customer relations. Demonstrates competency and possesses the technical skills appropriate for assigned cases and utilizes that knowledge in assisting others. Works under the supervision of the Clinical Nurse Manager of the Operating Room.

• Minimum
  
  Required:
  
  High school diploma or GED.
• Preferred:
  Associate degree in Surgical Technology.
• Required:
  
  Certification as a surgical technologist (CST).
• 6 months–2 years of active experience.

• PATIENT POPULATION (CLINICAL ONLY):
  Engage in population-appropriate communication. Possess knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks. Identify physical limitations and deploy interventions as needed. Recognize and respond to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interpret population-related data and plan care accordingly. Address diverse needs related to religious or cultural norms.
• Operate equipment safely. Recognize and respond to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
• Responsible for surgical preparation of procedures: check daily assignment; review surgical preference sheets; obtain needed supplies; ensure readiness of tables and instruments; obtain physician’s special instruments and sutures; communicate shortages to the surgeon prior to case start.
• Set up sterile instrumentation, supplies and equipment; maintain aseptic technique during setup and procedure; ensure proper functioning of equipment; relay pertinent information to relief personnel for safe continuity of care.
• Promote an environment of cooperation and teamwork: maintain prompt attendance; communicate with health team members; share information with nursing manager; mentor others; adapt to changes; manage breaks per policy.
• Assist with intraoperative activities under supervision: suctioning, holding retractors, skin closure, suturing, wound irrigation; circulate for operative procedures under RN supervision.
• Assist with postoperative patient care: prepare operative site, cleanse site, manage drainage tubes, apply sterile dressings, transfer patient to bed/stretcher; manage gloves and inventory; support case turnaround and room cleanliness; dispose of trash and linen; promote a safe environment; count instruments, sharps, and sponges per policy; transfer surgical specimens as required; perform equipment safety checks and ensure proper medication preparation when applicable.
• Demonstrate professional behavior: learn from experiences, serve as a role model, acknowledge peer accomplishments, participate in unit activities, seek and utilize feedback, participate in on-call emergencies, exercise safe judgment.
• Functions as a patient advocate: attend to physical and emotional needs, protect patient dignity and privacy, admit errors and take corrective steps as needed.
• Participate in educational activities of the unit: assist in orientation of new personnel and participate in unit in-services.
