Job Description

The Medical Assistant functions as an integral part of the Clinical office staff where the Medical Assistants perform administrative and clinical duties. Responsible for obtaining intake information for a specific patient population, performing tasks and treatments as delegated by licensed personnel and direct patient care as required.

Responsible for scheduling tests and procedures ordered by the physician and providing limited patient education and instructions associated with these tests and procedures.

Minimum

Required:

High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred: 7 - 11 Months equivalent experience.

Responsibilities
  • PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY):
    Engage in population-appropriate communication, demonstrate knowledge of growth and development milestones, give clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment, involve family/guardian in assessment and continuing care, identify physical limitations and deploy interventions, recognize and respond to behavioral health needs, interpret data and plan care accordingly, identify and respond to cultural/religious needs, perform treatments, administer medications or operate equipment safely, and recognize signs of abuse or neglect.
  • Obtain vital signs, EKGs, laboratory specimens, and other information required for proper evaluation in accordance with Medical Assistant competencies, using universal precautions.
  • Assist the provider in documenting notes, orders and prescriptions by preparing them in the Electronic Medical Record; all documents, prescriptions, and orders will be pended to the provider for review, edit, and sign as appropriate.
  • Prepare and maintain the clinic area, including cleaning and stocking examination rooms, daily setup and securing of computer equipment, and maintenance of diagnostic equipment.
  • Return routine patient telephone calls (e.g., prescription refills or pre-certification) with appropriate and timely documentation of actions taken.
  • Coordinate ancillary services such as diagnostic testing/imaging, hospital procedures and/or admissions, additional patient visits, and acquisition of pertinent medical records.
  • Maintain a positive, professional, and cooperative demeanor in all interactions with patients, staff, physicians, and management.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations; protect patient information and confidentiality; understand legal responsibilities and requirements of the Medical Assistant role; seek knowledge of quality measures and patient experience.
Administrative Duties
  • Using computer applications.
  • Answering telephones.
  • Greeting patients, updating and filing patient medical records.
  • Coding and filling out insurance forms.
  • Scheduling appointments.
  • Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.
  • Assist in the implementation of age-appropriate care for specific patient populations including provision of direct patient care as part of the clinical team.
