Ophthalmic Assistant II, Full-Time, First Shift

The Ophthalmic Assistant/Scribe II is an important part of the Ophthalmic team assisting in the effort to prevent, detect, diagnose, and manage conditions that interfere with sight. The primary focus is on the diagnosis and documentation of general eye health history under the supervision of certified providers. This role is also vital in documenting patient information in real-time during doctor's office visits, entering this data into electronic health records, and assisting with other administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY):

  • Engages in population appropriate communication.
  • Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
  • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
  • Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
  • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations.

Ophthalmic Assisting:

  • Obtain vital signs, specimens, and other necessary information as required for proper evaluation of patients in accordance with the UC Health competencies always utilizing universal precautions.
  • Performs treatments, administer medication and/or operates equipment safely.
  • Administers ophthalmic dilating eye drops
  • Assists physician with invasive procedures
  • Perform Visual Acuity Testing
  • Perform ophthalmic testing

Office Assisting:

  • Greeting patients, answering telephones, scheduling appointments, updating and filing patient medical records/insurance forms.
  • Assists with patient flow through clinic by greeting and rooming patients, scribing and walking patients to appropriate department (front desk, technicians, and patient care coordinators) to complete patient visit.
  • Maintain maintenance of the clinic area including but not to limited to: cleaning and stocking examination rooms, daily setup and securing of computer (laptops) equipment, and maintenance of diagnostic equipment.
  • Coordinate ancillary services such as diagnostic testing/imaging, hospital procedures and/or admission, additional patient visits, and acquisition of pertinent medical records.
  • Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services
  • Monitors and acts upon Epic inbox.

Scribing:

  • Accurately and thoroughly documents patient exams in electronic health record, noting specifically the exam components, diagnoses, treatment plans, orders, and medications.
  • Reviews all chart notes and correspondence daily to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Scribes with other providers as assigned.
  • Return routine patient telephone calls as directed and document actions taken.
  • Assists the provider in documenting notes, orders and prescriptions by setting them up in the Electronic Medical Record

Leadership:

  • Acts as a resource person for new personnel and/or temporary/agency staff working in the department, documenting and evaluating competency as required
  • Assist in the training of new employees.

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Willingly accepts and completes any other task or requests that the manager assigns beyond items specifically listed in job description.
Qualifications
  • Minimum

    Required:

    High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum

    Required:

    3 - 5 Years equivalent experience.
