Lead Of Payroll & Compliance
The E.W. Scripps Company is seeking a lead of payroll and compliance to serve as a senior advisor to HR business partners and cross-functional teams, providing advanced payroll expertise on complex operations, regulatory compliance, and organizational transformation initiatives. Manage and execute specialized payroll processes including multi-jurisdictional, retiree, and leave administration with precision and attention to detail.
What You'll Do:
- Apply expertise in state reciprocity and local taxes to ensure accurate employee tax setup.
- Respond promptly and accurately to tier 3 payroll support inquiries.
- Process the retiree and Canadian payroll and remit monthly filings.
- Process and analyze the validity of all retro payroll transactions.
- Prepare payroll entries including earnings, deductions and off cycle checks ensuring compliance with state laws and company policies for all final payments, recoups, contract payouts, and missed pay.
- Provide training and support to payroll team members for day-to-day tasks as well as serving as a back up to team members.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of leaves processes and upcoming state leave legislation.
- Manage and review timecards and leave calculations for accuracy during leave period.
- Assist third party vendor with troubleshooting errors to ensure short term disability, FMLA, and workers compensation payments are administered correctly.
- Provide support and guidance to HR business partners while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local laws and company policies.
- Ensure HR compliance by completing compliance reporting and assisting with subpoenas, I-9 Forms, E-Verify and audit requests.
- Assist with the payroll activities for company transformation, AI projects, mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
- Ensure policy and procedure compliance by coordinating with all relevant stakeholders.
- Other duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring:
- Associates degree in related discipline or equivalent years of experience preferred.
- Generally, 5+ years of experience in related field responsibility preferred.
- Strong adaptability, problem solving, attention to detail and written communication skills.
- Strong critical thinking skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to partner effectively with distinct groups of "customers" who may have competing interests.
- Excellent organizational and customer service skills.
- Experience in leave of absence and multi-state payroll a plus.
- Ability to interpret policies and procedures.
- Strong relationship-building skills with stakeholders at all levels using diverse communication channels including phone, video, and written correspondence.
- Knowledge of state reciprocity and local taxes to ensure accurate employee tax setup a plus.
- Experience in Workday is preferred.
