Job Overview:
This position applies the nursing process in providing direct and indirect holistic care to patients and their families. The position also collaborates, in a collegial manner, with physicians and other health care team members in meeting the patient's needs. This position may delegate certain aspects of care to those under their direct supervision, within the scope of nursing practice.

The 5300 Medical-Surgical Renal/Pulmonary Unit at Tri Health Bethesda North is a 43-bed unit specializing in the care of patients with renal and pulmonary conditions, including COPD exacerbations and dialysis complications. Our diverse patient population provides a dynamic environment that allows nurses to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge in a fast-paced environment. We are committed to creating a positive learning atmosphere for both new graduates and experienced nurses.
Our team focuses on professional growth, mastering essential skills such as peritoneal dialysis, time management, and delivering compassionate patient care. Nurses on 5300 gain valuable experience and expertise while working alongside a supportive and collaborative team. Nurses are equipped with significant technical knowledge related to the respiratory system, the ability to detect aberrant respiratory functions through auscultation, and a deep understanding of renal clearance and medications.
Our team is skilled in interpreting lab values and applying them to patient care, helping to ensure the best outcomes for patients with complex medical needs.
Our unit encourages and supports nurses in obtaining professional certifications, including Medical-Surgical (MED-SURG), Geriatric (GERO-BC), and Certified Peritoneal Dialysis Nurse (CPDN). We are affiliated with respected professional organizations such as the ANCC, ANA, the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, and the American Society of Nephrology, ensuring that our nurses stay connected to the latest advancements in the field. Nurses in this position are:
- newly licensed RNs in specialty areas where the Vizient PNR Program is a requirement and
- RNs with less than 1 year full time acute care RN experience prior to entering their RN role at Tri Health or
- RNs with less than 2 years part time acute care RN experience prior to entering their RN role at Tri Health
- RNs are enrolled in and required to complete the Vizient Professional Nurse Residency program.
- RNs will be moved to the Registered Nurse - Staff position upon completion of all PNR program requirements.
Job Requirements:
Associate's Degree
Required to complete all elements of the Tri Health Vizient Professional Nurse Residency Program within 1 year
New hires to obtain their BSN within 5 years of hire
BLS/CPR (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers)
Registered Nurse
Knowledge, judgment and skills derived from the Principles of Biological, Physical, Behavioral, Social and Nursing sciences to meet complex health care needs at various stages of the life cycle
Preferred membership in related professional organization
Up to 1 year experience Clinical Nursing
Job Responsibilities:
Performs initial and ongoing assessment of patient and family. Completes initial assessment tool. Documents ongoing assessment per unit/Tri Health guidelines. Communicates assessment findings to other health care providers as appropriate. Includes health counseling and health teaching needs in assessment.
Plans care for patient and family based on assessment, standards of care, and optimal specific outcomes. Initiates and individualizes appropriate patient care guidelines/plan of care or clinical pathways. Updates current plan of care as needed based on patient/family input and healthcare needs. Develops both short- and long-term goals with patient/family and healthcare team including discharge planning. Communicates plan of care to others.
