Job Overview

As a Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant in the Labor and Delivery unit at Good Samaritan Hospital, this role utilizes the nursing process to provide comprehensive, holistic care to patients and their families across the perinatal continuum. The CRNFA collaborates in a respectful, collegial manner with attending physicians, surgeons, and other members of the interdisciplinary health care team to ensure safe, high-quality patient-centered care.

Within the scope of nursing practice, the CRNFA may delegate appropriate aspects of care to team members under their direct supervision. Under the direction of an attending surgeon, the CRNFA performs duties related to pre-operative, intraoperative, and post-operative care, supporting surgical procedures while promoting optimal maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor s Degree in Nursing
  • Certified Nurse Operating Room, and Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) or eligible to sit for exam once criteria have been met
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)
  • Registered Nurse, State of Ohio
  • Knowledge, judgment, & skills derived from Biological, Physical, Behavioral, Social, & Nursing sciences
  • Diversified periop experience/scrubbing & circulating, Experience in surgical/procedures
  • Broad A&P knowledge
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination
  • Preferred membership in professional organization
  • 5-7 years experience (preferred)
  • 3 years as perioperative RN (Both in circulating and scrub role) and RNFA graduate of program that meets AORN criteria and is accepted by CCI (preferred)
  • 2-3 years experience specialty area (preferred)
Job Responsibilities
  • Provides expert first assistance on specialty surgical cases, including handling tissue, providing exposure, using instruments, suturing, and providing hemostasis. Assists in performing surgical procedures under the direct supervision of the surgeon; anticipating surgeon's needs, addressing positioning, prepping and draping patients, and independently functioning in surgery and on-call with regards to harvesting of grafts (e.g., vein, artery, tendon, bone), plastic closure on plastic cases, first assisting on robotic minimally invasive procedures and expert assisting on all other major surgical procedures.
  • Plans care for patient and family based on assessment, standards of care, and optimal specific outcomes. Initiates and individualizes appropriate patient care guidelines/plan of care or clinical pathways. Updates current plan of care as needed based on patient/family input and healthcare needs. Develops both short and long term goals with patient/family and healthcare team including discharge planning. Communicates plan of care to others.

    Provides first assistance in surgery including handling tissue, providing exposure, using instruments, suturing, and providing homeostasis. Provides expert first assistance on specialty surgical cases. In-depth knowledge of procedures. Effectively anticipates surgeon needs.
  • Provides a safe, therapeutic environment, maintains patient’s autonomy, dignity, and rights, and is sensitive to patient diversity. Seeks resources to help formulate ethical decisions. Balances priorities of the patient s needs and those of the unit/facility. Recognizes emergency situations and takes appropriate action. Completes patient assignment including documentation within scheduled timeframe. Bases interventions on clinical data and desired outcomes and documents accordingly.

    Trains/educates other staff and acts as an expert resource in specialty area through abilities in existing and newer knowledge and skills. Effectively communicates information relative to surgical cases.
  • Evaluates and implements the plan of care for patient based on ethical principles as outlined in the Tri Health Code of Ethical Business and Professional Behavior, and optimal specific patient outcomes. Documents the patient/family response to care including teaching, and collaborates with the patient/family and members of the health care team, including physicians, to revise plan of care as needed. Supervises the care of patient delegated to other team members.

    Provides expert second assistance as needed. Arrives promptly to communicate plan of care to team members.
  • Performs technical skills according to policy and procedure and accepted standards within their area of practice. Safely administers medications/treatments and monitors their effects. Operates equipment in a safe, appropriate manner. Independently operates equipment effectively relative to service area (e.g., robot, microscope, instrumentation, positioning equipment). Promotes teamwork through participation in set-up, clean-up, and room turnover activities. Performs supply and equipment related activities in addition to routing cleaning/stocking activities.
