Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM), one of the oldest medical schools in the country, partners with the UC Health academic healthcare system and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The Department of Emergency Medicine, an independent academic unit since 1984, directs the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Center for Emergency Care, the new FLEX‑ICU, and the Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program.

The COM Department of Emergency Medicine seeks a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to serve in the FLEX‑ICU at University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC). The position focuses on care of critically ill and injured patients, undifferentiated critically ill transfer patients, organ donors, and complex step‑down level patients. The work schedule includes 12‑hour shifts, days and nights, weekdays and weekends. Positions that work only nights are available.

Qualified applicants may also be eligible for overtime shifts in the ED.

Essential Functions
  • Provide state‑of‑the‑art care to critically ill and injured patients, including complex step‑down patients, in the FLEX‑ICU at UCMC.
  • Perform critical‑care duties necessary to stabilize and care for a mixed critical‑care population per the Standard Care Agreement with a collaborating physician.
  • Develop treatment plans in collaboration with the attending physician and multidisciplinary critical‑care team.
  • Prescribe and monitor medications in accordance with state and UCMC prescriptive authority.
  • Perform critical‑care procedures such as arterial catheter placement, central line placement, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, commensurate with existing skill and privileging. Independent capability is preferred but not required at job start.
  • Actively participate in Quality Management, data collection, and performance‑improvement initiatives.
  • Perform additional activities and/or duties assigned to achieve the overall mission of the position within the department.
Minimum Qualifications Nurse Practitioner
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program with a focus on acute care.
  • Active Ohio APRN license with prescriptive authority.
  • Active Board Certification in an appropriate nursing specialty.
  • Three (3) years of nursing experience; additional related experience may be required depending on specialty/sub‑specialty.
Physician Assistant
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Active Ohio Physician Assistant license with prescriptive authority.
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience; additional related experience may be required depending on specialty/sub‑specialty.
  • Critical care experience as an APP is expected; exceptional new graduates may be considered.
  • Experience with POCUS bedside ultrasound preferred.
  • Flexibility, teamwork, and enthusiasm are ideal characteristics.
