The Clinical Nurse I (CN I – Registered Nurse) promotes and restores patients' health by completing the nursing process, collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary team members, and providing physical and psychological support to patients, families, and friends. The RN utilizes knowledge derived from biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate culturally based and age‑specific patient care.

The RN incorporates the principles of the ANCC Synergy Model for patient care to drive nursing practice, resulting in optimum outcomes for the patient.

• Required:
  
  Associate Degree from an accredited school of Nursing (ASN)
• Preferred:
  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of Nursing (BSN)
• Registered Nurse licensed to practice in the State of Ohio
• Current BLS/ACLS/PALS per department requirements (see department standards for additional certification and licensure requirements). For employees working in UCMC Psychiatric Services, NCI‑APS certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
• No experience required.

• Engages in population‑appropriate communication and involves family or guardian in assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care. Gives clear instructions to patients and families regarding treatment and recognizes medical, psychological, or cultural needs.
• Provides treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to abuse or neglect signs/symptoms.
• Colleges clinical reasoning with nursing skills, collects data, follows protocols, and makes decisions based on evidence‑based guidelines.
• Advocates for patients and families, represents their concerns, maintains confidentiality, and acts as moral agent in ethical and clinical decisions.
• Creates a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment; promotes patient independence, establishes care goals, teaches about condition, medications, and self‑care, and maintains safe environment.
• Collaborates with others (patients, care providers) to achieve optimal patient goals; maintains cooperative relationship with multidisciplinary team.
• Manages environmental and system resources; applies knowledge to improve efficiency and safety.
• Responds to diversity by recognizing cultural differences, spiritual beliefs, gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, and personal values.
• Facilitates learning for patients, families, nursing staff, and community through formal and informal education.
• Evaluates practice and implements research‑based changes; follows standards and guidelines and seeks improvement opportunities.
