The 8300 Medical-Surgical Oncology Unit at Tri Health Bethesda North Hospital is a 44-bed unit that cares for a diverse patient population with medical-surgical needs including cardiothoracic, abdominal, vascular, gastrointestinal, women's health, surgeries and surgical oncology patients. Our unit provides a supportive learning environment for both new graduates and experienced nurses, offering the chance to master advanced clinical skills, such as the care of cardiothoracic surgical patients, chest tubes, and patients undergoing oncology or vascular treatments.
Nurses on this unit develop significant expertise in cancer care, surgical oncology, and managing complex conditions related to acute and chronic vascular diseases. In addition to handling advanced medical equipment and tools essential for cancer treatment, the 8300 team is committed to continuous professional growth. We are affiliated with renowned organizations, including the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, the Oncology Nursing Society, Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing, the American Cancer Society, and the American Nurses Association.
Nurses are encouraged to pursue certifications in Medical-Surgical Nursing, GERO-BC, palliative care, and the ONS Chemotherapy Certification, further enhancing their skills in providing comprehensive, compassionate care. Job Overview
This position provides assistance and/or performs basic activities of daily living and specified treatments and procedures under the direct supervision of the nurse. This position may perform non-direct patient care activities as assigned, requested, or directed. This position also performs clerical duties as assigned. Must have the interpersonal skill to communicate with respect and compassion to customers. This position also communicates information through various telecommunication devices and assists in coordinating patient flow.

Job Requirements:
- 2 years High School Education
- Age 17 with work permit
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Reading and math ability appropriate to the position
- Experience as an STNA, PCA or ACT strongly preferred
Job Responsibilities:
- Provides basic patient care under RN supervision; completes assigned tasks accurately and on time.
- Maintains competency in required skills and seeks clarification when needed.
- Ensures a safe environment; reports hazards, follows infection control, and adheres to safety/emergency procedures.
- Communicates respectfully and professionally with patients, families, and staff; collaborates effectively with the healthcare team.
- Documents care and observations per organizational guidelines; maintains medical records and performs downtime procedures.
- Answers phones and call lights promptly; relays accurate messages and assists with unit flow and customer service needs.
- Manages supplies and equipment, reporting shortages or malfunctions and ensuring readiness for the next user.
- Demonstrates accountability, supports organizational changes, and engages in ongoing self-development.
