Job Overview
The College of Medicine, Hoxworth Blood Center is recruiting for a full‑time (100% FTE), Blood Bank Technician in the Components Laboratory. The incumbent will support the University’s mission and commitment to excellence in our students, faculty, staff, and all our activities.
The Blood Bank Technician will prepare blood component products for transfusion, using specialized equipment and procedures. Responsibilities include preparing red blood cells, platelet concentrates, plasma, cryoprecipitate, leukocyte reduction, irradiation, freezing, deglycerolizing, and processing and shipping samples to the testing laboratory. The candidate must successfully complete an extensive FBI background check as a condition for employment. After initial training on the first shift, the technician will be assigned to evening shifts 3:30 pm–12:00 am Monday–Friday, with rotating weekends Saturday 12:00 pm–8:30 pm once training is completed.
STARTING WAGE: $20.95 per hour, plus additional shift differential pay.

Essential Functions- Prepare component products for transfusion (e.g., red blood cells, washed red blood cells, frozen red blood cells, deglycerolized red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, recovered plasma, cryoprecipitate, and source leukocytes and blood salvage).
- Label products for transfusion and dispose of unusable units.
- Assist with instruction or training of students, new employees, residents, etc.
- Evaluate the acceptability of incoming donor specimens and perform electronic data entry related to sample preparation for blood bank testing.
- Retrieve, interpret, and update blood product inventory data.
- Prepare pooled cryoprecipitate.
- Process incoming specimens; order issue and/or release blood components.
- Perform quality control checks on selected equipment.
- Communicate appropriate information to individuals internally, as well as external, to the department.
- Maintain a safe and clean work area.
- Monitor inventory of supplies and reagents.
- Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Four (4) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of the education requirement.
