Meat Clerk

Responsibilities

• Ensure cleanliness of meat and seafood cases, storage area, and work area for sanitation and safety.
• Clean shelves and products, keep floors free of liquid spills or water, remove hazardous debris, sweep.
• Stock meat and seafood cases; present product, face, fill, and organize items as directed; ensure tag and pricing accuracy.
• Examine rotation of all meat and seafood products, paying particular attention to expired stock.
• Respond positively to customer inquiries and assist customers with purchases, information, and product selection while working the meat counter; sell and cross‑sell products.
• Receive, inspect, and log products for accuracy of shipment, temperature, and quality.
• Monitor point‑of‑purchase signs; ensure availability of recipe cards, product coupons, promotional material, and information on complimentary foods.
• Operate and use equipment such as knives, scales, wrappers, compactors, garbage disposals, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
• Monitor that proper temperatures are maintained at all stages during the production of meat and seafood items.
• Prepare various meat and seafood products; use appropriate ingredients and cooking times.
• Maintain organization, stacking, and rotation of all meat products in cooler and freezer.
• Weigh and label meat products using knowledge of scales, weight measures, and tares; package, wrap, and date products following proper procedures.
• Maintain proper safety practices while using cutting accessories; comply with mesh glove use when cutting.
• Participate in pre‑inventory preparation; back stock and ensure tags match products.
• Sustain high level of product knowledge and preparation.
• Walk department regularly to ensure organized, sanitary, and clean appearance at all times.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalency degree.
• Preferred 1–2 years of grocery retail experience in meat department processes and procedures.
• Previous experience in a natural foods industry is a plus.

• Expert packaging and wrapping skills.
• Ability to cut and weigh various amounts of meat and seafood.
• Understand COOL compliance for seafood products and product origins.

Requires standing, walking, and moving for most of the shift, occasional lifting up to 26 lbs, frequent reaching and twisting, and working in varying temperatures.
