Job Overview

A full-time Research Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. George Smulian in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Dr. Smulian’s lab studies many aspects of the fungal pathogen Pneumocystis, including the development and optimization of molecular tools for gene editing and heterologous protein expression, a better understanding of the life cycle and nutritional needs of Pneumocystis, and host responses to infection.

Experience with molecular studies and protein analysis techniques will be important. Classification and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Essential Functions
  • Assist with the coordination of research studies in a particular discipline.
  • Make independent contributions to projects and studies based on professional training or functional experience.
  • Solve problems using combined research knowledge.
  • Work independently on whole projects/problems.
  • Contribute to the collective team effort.
  • Perform statistical and graphical analysis of data, interpret data and assist in judging validity of data.
  • Analyze research results.
  • Organize data search and analysis procedures.
  • Assist in establishing test controls, criteria and research standards.
  • Assist in the design of complex data processing systems to analyze research data.
  • Accomplish assigned results for project/studies or significant aspects of larger, complex assignments.
  • Serve as a seasoned level researcher.
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non‑exempt staff (e.g., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree required in a related field.
