Job Overview

The College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases, is currently accepting applications for a Full-Time Research Associate in Dr. Miller-Handley's lab. The faculty of the Division of Infectious Diseases is among the national leaders in basic science research in infectious diseases, the care of patients with HIV infections, tuberculosis and global health clinical care, education and research.

Essential Functions

* Design and execute experimental studies to characterize immune responses to allograft transplantation and infection, by employing flow cytometry, transplantation surgery in animal models, and molecular analyses. Apply a thorough understanding of the scientific principles underlying the research, including experimental design, immunological mechanisms, assay sensitivity and specificity, and data analysis in order to critically interpret experimental results, identify sources of variability or error, and systematically troubleshoot, optimize, and modify procedures and techniques to ensure rigor, reproducibility, and successful study outcomes.

* Under supervision, manage laboratory animal husbandry, including breeding programs, animal welfare monitoring, and assistance with routine animal procedures in compliance with institutional and federal guidelines. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory work and experiments, including creation of databases for new studies, expansion of databases for ongoing projects, development of datasets for statistical analysis, and implementation of quality control measures.

* Assist in training graduate students and junior trainees in laboratory protocols and development of projects including animal husbandry, animal procedure techniques, flow cytometry, infectious cultures and flow cytometry.

* Actively participate in laboratory meetings, presentations, and publications by presenting experimental data, engaging in scientific discussion, and providing constructive feedback on ongoing research.

* Assists in daily operations of laboratory including answering phone, maintaining lab supplies, organization, and cleanliness. Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment appropriately.

Required Education

* Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Zoology, or a related field.
