Job Title
This position is within the Metropolitan Sewer District of the City of Cincinnati.
Job DescriptionThis employee performs a variety of technical laboratory tests and other procedures and records and processes test results as appropriate. Employee ensures quality assurance and quality control within the laboratory; ensures adherence to established policies and procedures; and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)Knowledge of basic qualitative and quantitative analytical chemistry, decision making process, basic inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, clinical laboratory specialties including chemistry, microbiology, serology, and hematology, basic principles of instrumental analysis including chromatography and spectrometry, scientific statistics, environmental chemistry and microbiology, safety policies and procedures, English usage and specific terminology appropriate to position and program, computer applications for data entry and instrument operations.
Skill to operate complex analytical instrumentation, appropriate computer equipment, use properly all related hardware and software, and operate assigned vehicle in the course of duty.
Ability to identify problems, listen attentively, follow written and oral instructions, establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, solve analytical chemical problems, make timely logical decisions, identify subtle changes in instrument performance which indicate problems, assist in supervising laboratory technicians and assistants, perform basic qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses, perform chemical calculations, perform basic microbiological procedures, interpret and evaluate information received from others, and communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Examplesof Work Performed
Analyzes various types of samples for required parameters covering physical and/or chemical and/or microbiological parameters using approved methods. Responsible for operation and maintenance of more sophisticated equipment such as gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, clinical chemistry analyzers, and their respective computer data systems. Operates, calibrates, and maintains a variety of other equipment in the laboratory. Assists in supervising technicians and lab assistants in all phases of laboratory work.
Applies and enforces safety principles and practices as stipulated in department policies and procedures and the Employee Safety Instruction Manual (Green Book); identifies and eliminates all unsafe practices and conditions. Implements a program of quality assurance including statistical analysis of data. Assists in developing, reviewing, writing, and implementing analytical procedures. Analyzes non-routine field samples as the occasion arises. Prepares reports and maintains both computerized and manual records.
Assists in developing and implementing computer data handling systems for laboratory use. Conducts studies involving laboratory method developments. Assists in training of field personnel, laboratory technicians, and laboratory assistants in all phases of their work, e.g., proper sample collecting techniques. Prepares and conducts evaluations on chemical bid and delivery quality. Performs evaluations of treatment processes and distribution system. Testifies in legal proceedings.
Drives to various work sites to gather samples, attend meetings, or train others.
Education and Experience
Each applicant must have Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, scientific statistics, or a science discipline. Other requirements may include a valid Ohio Driver's License. Must be an excellent communicator and team builder.
Positions in the Water Works Department:
Must possess (or obtain) and maintain a Class II Water Treatment Professional Operator Certification by the completion of the probationary period.
