Position: CHEMIST (NON COMPETITIVE)

Chemist Position

WQT is looking to hire two Chemists (one for standard shift, and one for a non-standard shift). The interviews for both roles will be conducted simultaneously. Interviewed candidates will be considered for both roles. The non-standard shift role is a third shift position working Wednesday-Friday from 12:00 am to 9:30 am and every other weekend from 12:00 am-12:00 pm. This employee works independently with minimal supervision.

This employee performs a variety of technical laboratory tests and other procedures and records and processes test results as appropriate. Employee ensures quality assurance and quality control within the laboratory; ensures adherence to established policies and procedures; and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

Knowledge of:
Basic qualitative and quantitative analytical chemistry decision making process. Basic inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, microbiology, and biochemistry. Clinical laboratory specialties including chemistry, microbiology, serology, and hematology. Basic principles of instrumental analysis including chromatography and spectrometry. Scientific statistics. Environmental chemistry and microbiology. Safety policies and procedures, e.g., Employee Safety Instruction Manual, and applicable agency requirements. English usage and specific terminology appropriate to position and program.

Computer applications for data entry and instrument operations.

Skill to:
Operate complex analytical instrumentation. Operate appropriate computer equipment; use properly all related hardware and software. Operate assigned vehicle in the course of duty.

Ability to:
Identify problems. Listen attentively. Follow written and oral instructions. Establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers. Solve analytical chemical problems. Make timely logical decisions. Identify subtle changes in instrument performance which indicate problems. Assist in supervising laboratory technicians and assistants. Perform basic qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses. Perform chemical calculations. Perform basic microbiological procedures. Interpret and evaluate information received from others.

Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Required

Education and Experience

Each applicant must have Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, scientific statistics, or a science discipline.

Other requirements may include having a valid Ohio Driver's License. Must be an excellent communicator and team builder.

Positions in the Water Works Department:
Must possess (or obtain) and maintain a Class II Water Treatment Professional Operator Certification by the completion of the probationary period.

Positions at the Metropolitan Sewer District:
Must possess (or obtain) and maintain a Class 2 Ohio Wastewater Laboratory Analyst certification within one (1) year of reaching the Ohio Water Environmental Association qualifying experience level.

Working and Physical Conditions

Environmental Conditions:

Laboratory environment; exposure to computer screens; exposure to industrial waste and toxic chemicals, fumes and solvents.

Physical Conditions:

Duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; light and moderate lifting and carrying; general manual dexterity required; ability to distinguish colors required; must be able to operate assigned vehicle, as assigned.
