Behavioral Health Protective Services Officer-Optional Job Description Job Overview

In collaboration with BHS team and Protective Services Department, the BHPSO provides safety and security to patients, healthcare workers, and the unit by responding to situations to de-escalate potential escalating and unsafe situations. At the direction of the registered nurse, the BHPSO assists in maintaining a secure and safe environment for our patients, visitors and team members. The BHPSO functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team, under the direction of licensed nursing staff, performing various duties such as (but not limited to): patient escorts into the unit from the Emergency Department, between 10FG and 10HI units, conducts inventory of patient belongings, assistance in escorting patients to seclusion, supporting the proper application of restraints, conducting environmental safety rounds, conducting new admission searches and placing themselves in position to physically protect staff and themselves from acts of aggression.

Attends and actively participates in unit-based huddles and debriefings.

• High School Diploma or GED or GED in General Studies (Required)
• 2 - 3 years experience (Required)
• Microsoft Outlook and related office software programs

• Demonstrates knowledge of understanding of Hospital Department Policies and Procedures.
• Demonstrates knowledge of law enforcement/security and how it applies to Hospital Security.
• Sustain a positive working relationship with local law enforcement agencies.
• Sustains a positive working relationship with Tri Health entities.
• Maintains effective operational effectiveness of the shift.
• Performs the duties of a Protective Service Officer while assisting with special assignments.
• Effectively communicates through strong interpersonal skills.
• Utilizes conflict resolution and decision‑making skills.
• Participates in proactive communication representing the organization, PSO team as a whole and their respective team.
• Demonstrates proficiency in verbal and physical de‑escalation.
• Demonstrates knowledge in CMS and OMHAS regulations.
• Demonstrates proficiency in application of restraint and seclusion techniques.
• Promotes positive cooperation between departments by participating in daily huddles and educating staff about security matters.
• Effectively communicates through report writing, appropriate documentation, department huddles, and leadership meetings.
• Responds to security calls for service.

Will serve as a liaison between the Behavioral Health Unit and Protective Services as well as local law enforcement agencies.
