PositionMobile Diesel Technician Level II
The Mobile Diesel Technician Level II performs licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and follow-up repairs, light mechanical/hydraulic/electrical and electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. This role can perform more advanced diagnostics and repairs under the supervision of a Sr Mobile Diesel Technician or higher. It involves continuing to learn additional advanced mechanical skills and diagnostic techniques. A successful Diesel Technician II complies with all company policies and achieves high performance metrics.
Duties- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs on light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles in a mobile/field environment.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs on truck equipment including electrical, brake, cooling systems, starters/alternators, engine electronics, clutch systems, transmissions, differentials, and related components.
- Diagnose, adjust, and repair truck equipment as listed above, including air conditioning systems and diesel/electric controls.
- Inspect, test, and listen to equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments and gauges.
- Road test vehicles to diagnose malfunctions and verify proper operation.
- Identify problems, evaluate information, and generate/assess alternatives using sound judgment.
- Independently manage parts inventory and operate the company-issued service truck with periodic reconciliation.
- Maintain and operate the company-issued service vehicle, including safety checks and pre-/post-trip inspections.
- Communicate with clients to assess needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, and meet expectations.
- Manage concurrent tasks with effective prioritization and time management.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts and jacks.
- Document work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders using an iOS device and TRAIT application; upload photos as needed.
- Complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely manner.
- Work with a high degree of independence and manage daily schedule.
- Maintain a high level of productivity and work within or close to standard repair times.
- Obtain parts from approved local and national vendors as necessary.
- Communicate with management and the support team to obtain approvals, discuss RO findings, and retrieve PO numbers.
- Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
- Maintain company-issued service truck and perform safety checks and daily pre-/post-trip inspections.
- High School Diploma/GED and 3 years of related experience. A different combination (e.g., higher-level degree/certification or 5 years of related experience) may also be considered.
- Own a set of hand tools necessary to perform required duties.
- Obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification T8 (PMI) within 18 months.
- Must meet DOT/FMCSA regulations; able to pass a DOT pre-employment background screening and DOT physical.
- Current and valid DOT medical card or ability to obtain; if the medical card has four months or less before expiration, a DOT physical will be required.
- Must be at least 21 years old due to interstate operating authority requirements.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain/maintain a Driver Qualification File.
