Electrical Maintenance Technician

This employee performs basic electrical maintenance duties in which he/she installs, modifies, and maintains in efficient operating condition electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, equipment and motors so that all City departments (with the exception of Traffic Engineering) can provide such services as water, sewage disposal, lighting of public buildings and recreational facilities, and to provide emergency alarm systems to the community.

Employee troubleshoots, repairs, and/or modifies, and replaces damaged, malfunctioning, and worn electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment; works on equipment that operates voltages less than 600 volts (low voltage); may direct, orient, and demonstrate work to new workers who are assigned to assist on a given project in order to familiarize them with equipment, tools, work procedures, etc.,

and to assure safety. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of:
Basic arithmetic functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals using associated measuring devices such as micrometer, etc. Electrical test equipment. Proper operation of electrical motors to read and interpret motor nameplates and to diagnose electrical and mechanical malfunctions. Safety precautions when working with electricity, around machinery, in traffic, at heights, in confined areas, and with tools in order to protect self and others from injury.

Basic first aid needed for industrial and electrical work environment such as artificial respiration, treatment of electrical burns, shock, etc. Electrical current flow potential to make certain all equipment and circuits are grounded safely. Hardware used in the trade. Electrical trade language. Common symbols used on work orders and schematics. Parallel lighting circuits. Basic electrical circuits. How various circuits, equipment, and controls operate, fit, and work together.

Protective devices used in electrical systems. Various methods of joining wires and cables and making connection.

Skill to:
Install hardware safely. Use electrical test equipment safely such as ammeters, voltmeters, meggars, VOM's watt meters. Use tools such as general construction hand tools, electrical hand tools, and small power tools. Wire lights, fixtures, motors, controllers, and transformers. Pull, splice, and connect wiring and test completed circuits. Drive bucket trucks, aerial trucks, and similar trucks.

Ability to:
Calculate Ohm's Law and other related formulas to calculate resistance, current, voltage, and load. Read, interpret, make and work from basic schematics and one line and block drawings. Read, interpret, and familiarize self with manuals for new equipment. Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions. Demonstrate mechanical/electrical aptitude.

Installs and modifies conduit, poles, circuits, and hardware for new or existing conduit; measures, cuts, threads, bends conduit, and performs related work. Pulls, splices, and connects wiring and tests completed circuits. Installs and troubleshoots voice and data lines and fiber optic cable. Installs, replaces, tests, troubleshoots, adjusts, repairs, and maintains lighting fixtures of all types by making necessary wiring connections, etc.

Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains battery powered, emergency lighting equipment. Reads electrical drawings, work orders, and/or schematics and makes or sketches on line or block drawings as necessary. Maintains work records using paper forms, checklists, notepads, or various computer programs such as computerized maintenance management or work order software or other devices. Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains fractional to large size commercial, industrial type, low voltage electric motors safely by using hand tools and electrical test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, meggars, etc.

Takes current readings to calculate power loads using Ohm's Law, power formulas, etc.; replaces and seats brushes, dresses slip rings or commutators; cleans, lubricates, inspects, and repairs; reads maintenance logs. Services large industrial type air conditioning and heating units to maintain building temperatures. Maintains electrical control systems such as low voltage power transformers, switch gear, and controllers by determining circuit functions and electro-mechanical operation by inspecting, adjusting, cleaning, testing, and repairing;

inspects and tests circuit breakers, etc. Inspects, tests, cleans, recharges, adjusts, and replaces batteries, chargers and other DC equipment.
