Position: Resident Aide (Seasonal)
Position Overview The Resident Aide - Seasonal employee plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, structured, and supportive shelter environment for residents and staff. This position is responsible for supporting daily shelter operations, ensuring safety and policy compliance, assisting residents with resources and emotional support, and helping maintain an environment grounded in dignity, accountability, and respect.

Resident Aides serve as both support staff and frontline safety personnel, helping de-escalate situations, respond to emergencies, and ensure shelter operations run effectively while supporting Shelterhouse’s mission and values.

Essential

Job Duties Maintain strict confidentiality of all employee and resident information, ensuring compliance with HIPPA and all applicable privacy and documentation standards

Conduct regular security rounds to ensure safety, policy compliance, and a secure shelter environment

Monitor for policy violations, prohibited activity, or safety concerns within the shelter

Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents, and behavioral concerns

Assist with the coordination Shelterhouse safety protocols, i.e. Fire Drills, Tornado Drills, Law Enforcement and Emergency Medical Service arrivals

Assist residents in connecting with Shelterhouse programs during their shelter stay

Help connect residents to internal resources, staff, and supportive services as needed

Provide emotional support, encouragement, and respectful interaction with residents

Build professional and supportive relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries

Demonstrate patience, empathy, and professionalism when working with individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental health challenges

Support Addiction and Dependency efforts for residents struggling with substance use Assist Shelterhouse leadership and staff with operational and administrative support as needed

Qualifications & Requirements High School Diploma or GED required1+ year of customer service or related experience required

Experience working with homeless, behavioral health, addiction recovery, or human services populations preferred CPR, First Aid, and NARCAN training preferred or willingness to obtain

Must be able to work weekends and holidays as scheduled

Ability to de-escalate conflict and respond appropriately during crisis situations

Ability to maintain professionalism and emotional control in difficult situations

Strong attention to detail and situational awareness

Ability to work effectively in a high-energy and fast-paced environment

Knowledge or experience working with homeless, mentally ill, or substance-abusing populations preferred

Ability to maintain accurate documentation and follow shelter policies consistently

Physical Requirements (% of time spent performing requirements)
Frequent walking and movement throughout shelter facilities (approximately 90% of shift)
Occasional sitting and documentation tasks – 10%
Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds

Ability to respond quickly to emergencies or crisis situations as needed

Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and overnight shifts as scheduled

Must be available to work three (3), twelve (12) hour shifts per week. Hours are 6:30 pm to 6:30 am.
