Head Guard Responsibilities

Perform the duties of the lifeguard: responsible for the safety, supervision, and discipline of all persons using deep or shallow water pool facilities. Work under direct supervision of the Pool Manager. Take over as Pool Manager in his/her absence, ensuring safety and supervision of the pool facility, staff, participants, supplies, and equipment. Lead pool instructional and special event programs, manage customer service, memberships, and revenue collection.

Supervise staff and administer pool operations.

Must hold current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED certifications. Preferred:
American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Instructor certifications. Must pass an annual lifeguard water skills review test (80% minimum). Must attend Pool Manager/Head Guard training, gate monitor training, preseason training, and on‑site pool training. Must be 18 years or older and wear Department of Recreation staff swimwear.

Minimum Qualifications (KSAs) Knowledge of
  • Good customer service principles and water safety lifeguarding techniques, CPR and First Aid, and pool maintenance
  • General administrative and management principles and their application to daily swimming pool activities
  • Principles and practices of organization, administration, supervision, and personnel management
  • Principles of effective scanning and zone coverage

Required

Education and Experience
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training / First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer / AED certifications (unexpired)
  • Must successfully pass the annual lifeguard water skills review test with a minimum of 80% proficiency
  • Current Lifeguard Instructor Certification preferred
  • Current Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred
Other Requirements
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision
  • Must attend Pool Manager/Head Guard training, gate assistant training, preseason training, and on‑site pool training
  • Must wear assigned Department of Recreation staff uniforms
  • Unexpired certification must be maintained as part of employment
  • Position may require a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays
Working and Physical Conditions Environmental Conditions

Outdoor weather conditions with little to no temperature control; exposure to sun, extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain. Work on uneven and/or slippery surfaces; periodic exposure to hazardous conditions/situations and substances.

Physical Conditions

Duties require maintaining physical conditions necessary for swimming, standing, and walking for prolonged periods, lifting up to 50 lbs, and repairing minor fence cuts. Regularly required to stand, walk, or sit for long periods, and occasionally to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. Must be able to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
