GENERALDESCRIPTION
The Hamilton County Engineer's Office is seeking a Highway Maintenance Foreman to provide frontline leadership for a regional highway maintenance crew. This position is responsible for directing daily operations in roadways, bridges, and drainage maintenance and serving as a key leader for employees in the field. The ideal candidate will bring both technical expertise and strong leadership skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Lead, mentor, and support employees in their daily work, addressing both professional and personal challenges that impact performance.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with staff, leadership, and the public.
- Make sound decisions under pressure while maintaining safety and accountability.
- Set the example by working alongside crews and demonstrating professionalism, teamwork, and problem‑solving.
- Supervise and direct work crews in maintenance.
- Repair and construct county roadways, bridges, and drainage or ditch systems, including patches, paving, berm leveling, cleaning, culvert installation, pipe replacement, mowing, brush removal, sandblasting, painting, welding, guardrail installation, and more.
- Schedule, assign, and review work of crew.
- Provide coaching and training consistent with a commitment to continuous learning and development.
- Ensure safety standards and foster a “safety first” culture.
- Provide continuous respectful and objective feedback on employee performance for annual evaluations.
- Recommend assignment and discipline decisions.
- Receive and address grievances.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Demonstrate teamwork, mutual respect, and service to external citizens and coworkers.
- Provide daily leadership, guidance, and mentorship to crew members.
- Operate heavy and medium equipment and work with crews on maintenance projects.
- Perform minor maintenance of equipment.
- Balance hands‑on work with leadership responsibilities.
- Maintain work‑related records including manpower, progress, materials, and issues.
- Perform specialty functions such as level, project inspector, highway inspector roles as needed.
- Inspect bridges and culverts to determine repair needs.
- Collect and submit materials for study.
- Attend meetings and serve on committees as directed.
- Attend training and seminars as directed.
- Meet all job safety requirements and applicable OSHA safety standards.
- Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
- When scheduled for on‑call assignment, be available after normal hours or on weekends/holidays.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Associate Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, construction, or related field AND three (3) years of work experience in highway or bridge construction or maintenance (at least one year in a supervisory role). Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and training are acceptable.
Applicants must have relevant experience in roadway or infrastructure maintenance, prior supervisory experience, and hold a valid Class A CDL.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS- Valid state of residency driver’s license.
