Scope
Waste Treatment Operator monitors the water supply system (Wells), wastewater treatment, and sludge processing for the mill. Monitors computer screens and control panels for variation, makes adjustments to valves manually or remotely to regulate process flows. Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings. Must monitor and adjust pumps and motors to control sludge process. Maintains log sheet, records and monitors gauge readings and collects wastewater samples.

- Supports Sofidel America’s Good Manufacturing Practices and HACCP to promote a safe, sanitary, and hygienically sound workplace.
- Treat all wastewater streams from various process areas in the mill and effectively remove primary and secondary solids and biological oxidation of organic material to meet regulatory discharge permit limits.
- Monitors all equipment in the Waste Water Treatment area and reports issues as warranted.
- Must be able to troubleshoot problems.
- Must be able to recognize emergency situations and know how to respond.
- Must keep the area clean.
- Fills out log sheet and enters numbers into Plan Applications.
- Collects samples and performs required testing on samples.
- Monitors the unloading of bulk chemicals.
- Collaborates with the EHS Manager for activities concerning environmental certifications.
- Follows environmental and safety guidelines.
- Performs lockouts for preparation of maintenance work in the Waste Treatment area and logs all repairs.
- Performs a walk‑down of the Waste Water Treatment Area at least twice per shift looking for odd smells, leaks, noises, etc.
- Promotes a safety‑bound corporate culture.
- Promotes the corporate principles and values.
- Perform or assist with any operations, as required to maintain workflow and meet schedules and quality requirements. Notify supervision of unusual equipment or operating problems and the need for additional material and supplies.
- Maintain a safe work area and comply with safety procedures and equipment operating rules, keeping the area in a clean and orderly condition.
- Participate in any variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems, and maintain the specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, policies, and regulatory guidelines.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Computer and peripherals; standard and customized software applications and tools; test tubes; pH meter; conductivity tester; usual office equipment; and other miscellaneous hand tools.
Education / ExperienceHigh School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED). Prior experience required and minimum Class 1 Wastewater License;
Level 2 Wastewater License preferred.
Fluent in English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and quality and procedure manuals.
Math AbilityAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Certificates and LicensesCertified Class 1 Operator.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required in the plant and warehouse areas, including safety shoes, eye and ear protection, reflective vests, and hairnets or hats. Temperatures in the plant/warehouse can vary seasonally. Employees are exposed to paper dust and noise levels that may require hearing protection.
