Overview – 5 East ObservationThis 32-bed Observation unit provides continued assessment, monitoring, and additional testing after patients are worked up in the ED to determine the appropriate decision to discharge or admit.
Responsibilities- The registered nurse provides leadership in a professional practice setting.
- Team player who contributes to building the team by helping others succeed through role modelling and mentoring.
- Assigns or delegates tasks based on patient needs and the skill level of the RN, LPN or support staff. Assigns duties for staff when performing charge roles.
- Maintains a safe environment, considers patient condition, complexity of intervention, and predictability of outcome.
- Provides peers with verbal and written feedback regarding clinical practice and role performance.
- Shares knowledge and skills with peers and colleagues.
- Fosters a culture where safe risk taking is expected and mistakes are used as learning opportunities.
- Participates on interdisciplinary teams to evaluate clinical care or health services.
- Promotes patient safety initiatives (e.g., National Patient Safety Goals).
- Participates in department-specific quality initiatives and ensures appropriate order sets are used.
- Supervises delegates and evaluates the LPN scope of practice as appropriate.
- Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, evaluate and implement a patient plan of care as prescribed by the physician, nurse and hospital policy including patient and family.
- Derives culturally and age-appropriate outcomes involving the patient, family and other health care providers.
- Analyzes health status and patient data to determine care needs.
- Assesses changes in patient condition and notifies the physician or supervisor, intervening appropriately and documenting accordingly.
- Accepts assignments outside the primary unit as needed and performs duties within individualized competency.
- Demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning for self and others and promotes the profession through participation in professional organizations.
- Seeks formal and independent learning activities using current research findings to maintain and develop clinical skills.
- Participates in systematic peer review and obtains feedback to identify strengths and development needs.
- Meets time and attendance guidelines per hospital policy.
- Evaluates and assesses patient and family satisfaction and participates in department-specific patient satisfaction initiatives.
- Promotes compassionate, patient- and family-centered communication.
- Addresses patient and family concerns and uses effective time management to complete duties within the shift.
Minimum
- Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
- Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
- Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
- Current State of PA RN licensure OR current multi-state licensure through the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
- CPR certification
Preferred
- Certification in area of specialty
