Graduate Assistant – Community Engagement Scholar

The Office of Civic and Community Engagement (OCCE) is seeking applications for a Graduate Assistant – Community Engagement Scholar. In this role, the Graduate Assistant will collaborate with the Director of Civic and Community Engagement, as well as HMC staff, faculty and students, to research, organize, implement, and evaluate efforts under the Community-based Co-learning Innovation Initiative. The Graduate Assistant will also support the development and implementation of programs under the Cultivating Connections Initiative, with a focus on student-facing engagement.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in fostering student leadership through an equity-minded framework while coordinating and advancing community engagement programs and services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research and evaluate best practices related to community-based learning course designation criteria, community-engaged pathways, and ethics courses (theory and practice).
  • Research what is needed to create a program of study as an emphasis and or concentration in community-based learning.
  • Oversee OCCE's Crochet for a Cause project and collaborate with student organizations and makerspaces at the Claremont Colleges for its sustainability and successful implementation.
  • Meet and build relationships with various community stakeholders, both internally at HMC and externally within the local community.
  • Assist the Assistant Director in coordinating outreach and semester check-ins with student organizations engaged in community-based and service work; provide guidance on resources, partnerships, and support pathways to strengthen and sustain student-led initiatives.
  • Support student organizations' use of Give Pulse to track volunteer engagement, manage events, and document participation, including onboarding and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain Give Pulse activity to ensure accurate reporting of volunteer hours, event participation, and community partnerships.
  • Coordinate and facilitate Community Conversations for HMC students, including planning logistics, developing discussion frameworks, and facilitating dialogue.
  • Conduct surveys and post-event feedback assessments regarding engagement in conversations across differences.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Diversity and other division units for joint workshops, including co-designing and implementing programming focused on dialogue across differences.
  • Designing and creating marketing materials for community engagement initiatives, including flyers, social media graphics, and outreach content, and contributing to campus communications, such as the DSA Digest newsletter, to increase visibility and participation.
  • Complete weekly reports, including summarizing program activities, participation, and key outcomes.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs) for community engagement events and initiatives, including creating planning documents, timelines, and logistical checklists to ensure consistency, continuity, and smooth transitions across student leaders and staff.
  • Ensure a smooth transition by completing transition documents for their successor by the end of their term.
  • Performs other unit or DSA-related duties as assigned, such as proctoring exams for the Office of Accessible Education, tabling for DSA events (Fall Fest, DSA Open House).

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:

    Bachelor's degree and enrollment in a Master's degree program in Higher Education Administration, Mathematics, Science, Education, or another related field.
  • Experience:

    Experience developing and maintaining positive and trusting relationships with members of various community organizations, schools, and outreach programs.
  • Licenses/Certifications:

    Valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the College's automobile insurance carrier.
