GeneralPurpose
Under the general supervision of the Public Works Director, the Heavy Construction Superintendent oversees and supervises the development and implementation of in-house heavy civil construction projects including oversight of a crew(s) involved in a variety of projects such as grading, mass earthwork, streets, stormwater facilities, and water and sewer line construction. This position requires the ability to operate a variety of city equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance and repair activities.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing. Safety sensitive positions must comply to federal regulations where marijuana still remains illegal. Possession of a medical marijuana license does not exempt safety sensitive positions from federal regulations. Should one of these safety sensitive positions test positive on a drug test and lose the ability to perform within the job description outline, the City of Claremore will implement the zero tolerance policy resulting in immediate termination.
EssentialFunctions
- Plans, schedules and implements construction activities designed to improve city infrastructure.
- Oversees Heavy Construction Department’s work to determine acceptability and conformance to standards.
- Maintains records of all construction activities including project pictures, work orders and status reports.
- Trains, supervises, manages and disciplines employees performing construction, maintenance and installation of city infrastructure.
- Responsible for hiring, retention and discipline of all Heavy Construction Department employees.
- Responsible for planning and management of the Heavy Construction Department budget.
- Assists Engineering Department with capital planning for infrastructure projects.
- Requisition s needed equipment and supplies for the department and maintains a variety of records relating to personnel, equipment and supplies.
- Provides field direction for layout and construction of various construction components including concrete formwork, concrete finishing, piping systems, grading, excavations and paving.
- Determines the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, water, and sewer lines from the sources prior to excavations.
- Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking tools and equipment after use. Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity.
- Performs and oversees all required labor involved in new construction and maintenance projects, including excavating, pavement/concrete cutting, ditch digging, as well as the laying/back filling of pipes.
- Oversees operation of trucks and construction or power equipment, such as dozers, scrapers, track loaders, excavators, mechanized broom, back-hoe, utility truck, tamper, dump truck, plate compactor, jetter/inductor truck, compressors, generators, trenchers, common hand and power tools, jackhammers, saws, and other small equipment used to construct new streets and drainage systems, as well as maintain or repair facilities already in place.
- Oversees operation and maintenance of a haul truck and low boy trailer moving equipment as well as operating end dump trailer.
- Coordinates project management tasks with other supervisors within the Public Works organization.
- Oversees the finishing of freshly poured concrete streets, walkways, and curbs to specified grades and contours using hand tools such as floats, trowels, and screeds.
