General Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Electric Administrator. This is an entry-level apprentice lineman performing entry-level work in the construction, operation, maintenance and repairs of power and lighting distribution systems; restores power, maintains lines and related/associated equipment used in overhead and underground service and substations to provide reliable service. The incumbent exercises little to no independent decision making in accomplishing specific assignments and works under the direct supervision of the Crew Chief.

This position is required to start and complete the first year of the Municipal Electric Systems of Oklahoma (MESO) Certified Line Apprentice Training Program. This position does not work on live lines or equipment.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug testing. Safety sensitive positions must comply to federal regulations where marijuana still remains illegal. Possession of a medical marijuana license does not exempt safety sensitive positions from federal regulations. Should one of these safety sensitive positions test positive on a drug test and lose the ability to perform within the job description outline, the City of Claremore will implement the zero tolerance policy resulting in immediate termination.

Essential

Functions
  • Must complete and pass the first year of the MESO apprenticeship program within 15 months from the start date of the program
  • Assists with installation, operation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electrical power lines, systems, and associated/related equipment
  • Assists in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of transmission and substation facilities
  • Assists with service calls concerning power outages and electrical problems
  • Learns to operate motorized equipment, use hand tools and perform routine maintenance on electrical equipment, machinery and tools
  • Learns to use climber’s belt and tools and climb poles
  • Follows safety guidelines as set forth in OSHA and NESC requirements
  • Must be willing to periodically perform stand-by and call-back duties and be available for call outs during off duty hours to include holidays and weekends
  • Must live within twenty-five (25) miles of the Electric warehouse
  • Shall stock and service vehicles to be equipped to respond to emergency situations
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and materials and guards against loss or damage

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
  • Knowledge:
    Some knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in electrical distribution system maintenance work;
    Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;
    Some knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems and ability to apply this knowledge to work situations
  • Abilities:
    Come to work on time, follow directions, be honest and dependable, maintain safe work environment, be cooperative, have a positive attitude, be courteous and considerate team member, manage time effectively, concentrate on work, recognize problems and find solutions; ability to learn proper methods, procedures and safety precautions of line work; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions;
    Ability to work under varying weather conditions; ability to learn to climb poles with a climber’s belt and hooks and perform strenuous duties in all kinds of conditions and weather; ability to understand and provide oral and written instructions quickly and accurately, and under adverse conditions; must be able to learn to make some mathematical computations accurately
  • Skills:

    Skill when dealing with people in a positive, customer service oriented manner; some skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment;
    Ability to learn the application of first aid methods including artificial respiration
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and must be able to complete necessary requirements of a four-year apprenticeship or equivalent program
