Salary Range: $21.00 – $24.00 / Hour
General PurposeUnder the general supervision, the Construction Technician performs a variety of civil construction projects including streets, storm water facilities, and water and sewer line construction.
Safety Sensitive Position – subject to random drug testing and federal regulations regarding marijuana. The City of Claremore will implement a zero‑tolerance policy resulting in immediate termination for drug‑positive results.
- Operate gasoline powered hand tools.
- Use various hand tools such as concrete rakes, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers, shovels, etc.
- Assist in the layout and construction of concrete formwork, concrete finishing, piping systems, grading, excavations and paving.
- Determine the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, water, and sewer lines prior to excavations.
- Maintain equipment and tools by cleaning and inspecting after use; maintain records of inspections and maintenance activity.
- Perform all required labor for new construction and maintenance projects, including pavement/concrete cutting, ditch digging, and pipe laying/back filling.
- Operate trucks and construction or power equipment such as utility trucks, tamper, dump truck, plate compactor, jetter/inductor truck, compressors, generators, trenchers, jackhammers, saws, and other small equipment used to construct or repair streets and drainage systems.
- Assist in the operation and maintenance of haul truck and low‑boy trailer.
- Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; report defects or needed repairs to the construction manager.
- Perform manual tasks such as setting bases and forms to pour concrete.
- Signal workers engaged in pouring concrete when forms are filled to specified depths.
- Operate concrete saw to cut expansion/contraction joints; fill cuts with tar.
- Finish surfaces of freshly poured concrete streets, walkways, and curbs to specified grade and contour using hand tools such as floats, trowels, and screeds.
- Perform all duties in conformance with safety and security standards.
- Coordinate traffic control at work sites.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge: Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
- Abilities: Punctual, follow directions, dependable, maintain safe work environment, cooperative, positive attitude, courteous, considerate team member, manage time effectively, recognize problems and find solutions. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods, work safely, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and establish effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
- Skills: Operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Valid Oklahoma State Driver’s License Class “D” and the ability to obtain Class “A” CDL within 6 months.
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
Motorized vehicles and equipment including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, serial propane kettle, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, and ditch witch.
Physical DemandsRegularly uses hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently stands, talks, hears, walks, sits, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls, and smells. Must lift or move up to 25 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral and depth perception; ability to adjust focus.
WorkEnvironment
Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions. Frequently near moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions, vibration, high or precarious places, fume or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. Noise level is usually loud.
