GENERAL

JOB SUMMARY:

The Lead Preschool Teacher assists the Laboratory Preschool Director with planning, supervising, and implementing Pierpont CTC’s Laboratory Preschool in compliance with state requirements, standards, and applicable policies and procedures. The position provides a stimulating, safe, and developmentally appropriate educational environment where children have the opportunity to develop cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills. Provides a block and lesson plan by which classes are conducted.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serves as a lead in the instruction of children in a childcare age unit through the development and implementation of lesson plans and other activities.
  • Participates in providing demonstrations of age-appropriate development and behavior of children;
  • Supervises or oversees the work of student workers and/or Early Childhood Education (ECE) students assigned to the area and/or lower-level childcare staff;
  • Prepares various reports and correspondence regarding preschool operations and activities; maintains and ensures physical organization and cleanliness of the area/unit to which assigned;
  • Communicates with parents on children's progress and behavior, as needed;
  • Provides guidance to students regarding childcare program/unit rules and regulations related to ECE programming;
  • Develops and implements developmentally appropriate learning experiences based on assigned tasks that promote social, emotional, cognitive, physical, creative, and language development based on the principles of Reggio Emilia;
  • Greets children and families upon their arrival and departure to the preschool and communicates with parents on a daily basis;
  • Interacts with the preschool children in a manner that makes them feel safe, accepted, encouraged, and challenged;
  • Maintains state licensing regulations and keeps current on health and licensing requirements;
  • Coordinates planning activities with the Laboratory Preschool Director;
  • Participates in family conferences;
  • Performs and oversees cleaning and sanitizing procedures to ensure a clean, healthy environment; and
  • Supports and enhances the Pierpont ECE Program by collaborating with the Program Coordinator and Laboratory Preschool Director to coordinate classroom practices and curriculum with current best academic practices.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities commensurate with the position are identified and defined in the College’s Faculty Handbook.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Records maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of early childhood education programs and techniques.
  • Knowledge of child development theory and practice.
  • Ability to evaluate, design, and implement curriculum, testing, and/or teaching methodologies.
  • Ability to provide activities for children that encourage healthy growth.
  • Ability to exercise control and maintain classroom discipline.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety procedures.
  • Ability to provide a supportive and caring environment for children.
  • WV STARS registered
  • Must complete/have completed the required WV STARS training (Abuse Recognition and Prevention, Medication Administration, Pre-service Training) prior to first day of employment
  • Early Childhood Classroom Assistant Teacher (ECCAT) Certification through the State of West Virginia (preferred) CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Possess a current Food Handler’s Card
  • Had a recent satisfactory TB Test
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Associate’s degree in early childhood education and two years of childcare/teaching or other relevant experience is required. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant area is preferred.
