Nature of Work

The Individual in this position is responsible for, under general supervision, reporting to the Source Water Assessment and Protection Program of the Office of Environmental Health Services. This position is critical in assuring compliance with Federal and State rules, regulation, guidance and policies to meet the program’s primary responsibilities as delegated to the West Virginia Department of Health (WVDH).

Duties include:

data entry for mathematical models and other tracking computer software; reviewing public water system (PWS) source water protection plans; field activities within the state to evaluate PWS source water intakes and take water quality samples to assure existing and future wells or surface intakes are afforded maximum protection; operating a geographical information system (GIS) station for program use; researching and using mathematics, models, hydrology, and geological principles to scientifically establish wellhead protection and source water protection areas for PWS;

interpreting engineering, hydrology and other technical reports; developing, adopting, and implementing laws, regulations, and design standards relating to water wells, wellhead protection, groundwater protection and assisting with the training and certification of water well drillers. Occasional in-state overnight travel is associated with this position. Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Training :
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

OR

Substitution :
Additional full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience as described below may be substituted for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of experience for every thirty (30) semester hours of training.

AND

Experience :
Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid professional experience in the acquisition, preservation, protection and enhancement of environmental/natural resources, environmental protection or in an agency-specific area related to environmental impact.

OR

Substitution :
Graduate coursework from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience at the rate of fifteen (15) semester hours for every one (1) year of experience.
