Job Title: LMS Special Education Teacher with a Math Emphasis .6 FTE One-Year-Only

Reports to: Special Education Director/Building Principal

Bargaining Group: Clarkston Education Association (CEA)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Terms of Employment: .6 FTE, 4.5 Hours per Day, State Cert Salary Schedule, $35,926-$65,140

Education/Certification: Valid Washington State Teacher’s Certificate with an endorsement in Special Education appropriate for Middle School

Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work with and teach students and staff
  • Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, IEPs, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, governmental regulations and professional journals
  • Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, and computerize IEPs
  • Evidence of strong content area instructional capabilities at the middle school level
  • Evidence of providing for student individual learning
  • Evidence of training and experience utilizing computer technology for word processing, grading, recording attendance, communicating by e‑mail, and implementing these computer programs into daily use in the classroom
  • Evidence of motivating and instructing students of all ability levels with emphasis on providing for their individual learning styles — basic levels to extensions beyond
  • Evidence of maintaining a positive, productive learning climate within the classroom as well as with parents and staff
Experience

Evidence of successful middle school Special Education teaching experience within the last five years preferred

  • Evidence of training or experience in curriculum instruction of mathematics preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request
  • Work pro‑actively with all students through the establishment of clear expectations, the use of negotiation and compromise, and the maintenance of regular parent‑staff communication regarding progress
  • Work positively and constructively in a changing school environment focusing on improving student outcomes
  • Participate in the development of curriculum and implementation
  • Participate in workshops and training sessions that support the department’s objectives
  • Use technology when teaching
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil
  • Maintain control of storage and use of school‑owned equipment
  • Select and requisition equipment and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records
  • Work in a context with multicultural and at‑risk students
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, motivating reluctant students. Create an atmosphere where cultural diversity is a norm
  • Incorporate technology into the instructional plan
  • Be a “team” player by establishing and maintaining cooperative professional relationships with peers
  • Be innovative and committed to the challenge of change
  • Be committed to success for all students
  • Cooperate in schedule changes and accommodate other needs of students
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues
  • Ability to motivate and instruct students of all ability levels with emphasis on providing for individual learning styles (basic level and extensions beyond basic)
  • Demonstrated effective communication
  • Training or experience in advising or coaching student activity
  • Understanding of school policies and community norms as they pertain to acceptable behavior
Other Duties
  • Maintain professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional development
  • Create an effective learning environment through student recruitment, dynamic learning opportunities, and student engagement
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or appropriate administrator
