Terms of Employment: 1.0 FTE, 7.5 Hours per Day - Per Bargaining Agreement;
Placement on Clarkston School District Certificated Salary Schedule based on education and experience

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree
  • Must be eligible for or possess a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with a Special Education endorsement
  • Successful Washington State Patrol check and FBI Fingerprint Clearance Report and Disclosure Statement in accordance with state law

Responsibilities and Duties:

Position Summary:

The Self-Contained Special Education Teacher provides services in the designated areas of students' individual educational program (IEP), assessment, direct instruction, behavioral and social skills training, and consultation with staff and parents. The teacher focuses on academic, behavioral and life skills to enable students to function to their highest possible level within the educational system. In a classroom, the employee may work and case manage children who can vary from mild to severe disabilities at the elementary school level.

The employee is primarily responsible for effective teaching and learning of the assigned subject(s) following district approved curriculum, instruction and assessment practices. Primary responsibility shall include student safety and appropriate collaboration and attention to each student's readiness to learn including needed guidance, discipline, and welfare. Employee may teach in a variety of elementary and/or secondary educational, individual or team teaching, settings.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide specifically designed instruction to meet the unique needs, abilities and limitations of identified students.
  • Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
  • Develop individual educational programs (IEP) for each student and meet with parents for input and approval.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and changes instructional strategies and Intervention plans when necessary.
  • Assess the academic and developmental disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records as required by law, district policy, and special education rules and regulations.
  • Work with evaluation team in developing specific behavioral intervention plans and tracks student progress.
  • Manages and directs activities of instructional aides and volunteers.
  • Completes assessments, reports, and IEP for each student within timelines.
  • Assists in the screening, assessment, evaluation, and IEP phases of special needs students.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology devices and a willingness to integrate assistive technology into everyday classroom activities.
  • Assists in the selection of instructional and non-instructional materials.
  • Acts as a resource to regular classroom teachers on determining and meeting the needs and identifying modifications and/or accommodations and utilizing the learning styles of special needs students.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, and provide personal care for students such as changing diapers and clothes, other hygiene concerns and feeding.
  • Ability to work with therapists and outside agency personnel.
  • Prepares students, administers, state assessments and portfolios.
  • Participates in building duties and activities as assigned by the building principal as a part of the responsibilities of certificated staff.

Supervision and Controls over the Work:

The employee works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of a designated school administrator. The employee's work is governed, controlled, and evaluated by acceptable professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, provisions of Washington Administrative Code and Revised Code of Washington, the direction of the supervisor, and performance standards and expectations as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
