Interim Director Of Student Services

The Interim Executive Director of Special Education provides support to principals and student services staff, as well as acting as a resource to parents, patrons, administration, and the School Board by following District, State, and Federal objectives at the direction of the superintendent.

Essential duties include supervising the development and implementation of the District's Student Services programs, working cooperatively with the superintendent and other administrators, keeping informed of curricular developments, scheduling regular meetings, acting as a resource for staff, assisting in the implementation of professional development, providing vision and leadership for disabled and at-risk students, attending meetings, professionally interacting with students, parents, staff, and members of the public, maintaining a Section 504/ADA grievance procedure, developing a systematic procedure for monitoring compliance, disseminating information about student rights, facilitating meetings with the 504 team, communicating accommodations, monitoring students with a 504 plan, being knowledgeable of resources for assistance, disseminating facility accessibility information, providing ongoing review of district policies, overseeing child find, out-of-district, early childhood, and transition programs, serving as the district homeless and foster care liaison, overseeing the High Cap and ELL Director and students, overseeing the Discovery Virtual School Special Education procedures and student intake, serving as the Crisis Response Team lead, serving as the MTSS Team Lead, serving as the civil rights and Title IX Compliance Officer, overseeing attendance and the Community Engagement Board Court, and overseeing the threat assessment process.

Responsibilities include defining, delegating, and participating with the services of all Student Services staff members, facilitating a team approach with all programs providing student services, coordinating with the Executive Director of Finance to prepare and administer the annual department budget, maintaining compliance and submitting Safety Net Grants as needed, establishing and maintaining a system for monitoring the effectiveness of program implementation, directing the development and revision of programs, policies and procedures to comply with federal, state, and local legislation and district policy, responsible for the maintenance and security of department records and reports, advising the Superintendent on all necessary matters of interest with regard to the operation of the department, preparing reports for federal, state and local regulatory agencies, maintenance and development of contractual services as needed for the department, and maintaining a high level of knowledge regarding developing special education issues, changes in the law and case law, and educational methods of educating students with disabilities.

Staff development includes working with the Superintendent as needed to provide professional development for staff, overseeing the Foundational Course of Study and General Para educator Certificate professional development budget and training, working with the Superintendent and Executive Director of Human Resources to establish personnel needs, coordinating and directing special services student placements, hiring, leading, and evaluating various staff members, serving as special education representative to various organizations, communicating and working with principals and directors to establish consistency in program goals, advising on information and public relations needs, and tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.

Required qualifications include a Master's Degree in Educational Administration or related field, WA State K-12 Principal and or Program Administrator Certificate, minimum of 5 years of successful teaching, ability to work with bargaining groups, commitment to and continued evaluation of a safe learning and working environment, and required references and background check.

Preferred qualifications include a successful academic background in staff supervision and evaluation.

Working conditions include primarily an indoor, climate-controlled office and school environment, regular exposure to high-noise levels, significant periods of walking, standing, and sitting, occasional lifting, climbing, bending, and stooping, high-stress, fast-paced environment requiring the ability to manage multiple, constant interruptions, extended hours, including early mornings, evenings for meetings, and events, frequent, sometimes difficult, interactions with students, staff, parents, and community members, and use of general office equipment and educational software.
