Light Equipment Operator
Job SummaryThe Civil Light Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of light construction equipment in support of civil construction projects. This position assists with excavation, utility installation, grading, material handling, concrete preparation, site development, and roadway construction while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications. The Civil Light Equipment Operator works closely with supervisors, foremen, equipment operators, laborers, and utility crews to support successful project execution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Safely operate light construction equipment, including skid steers, compact track loaders, rollers, compactors, telehandlers, forklifts, water trucks, trench rollers, and other support equipment.
- Perform excavation, trenching, back filling, grading, and site preparation for civil construction projects.
- Assist with the installation of underground utilities, including water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, electrical conduit, and communication systems.
- Perform fine grading around structures, utilities, sidewalks, curbs, and pavement.
- Load, transport, and place soil, aggregate, pipe, concrete materials, and construction supplies.
- Operate compaction equipment to achieve required density and project specifications.
- Assist with erosion control, drainage improvements, and site stabilization measures.
- Work safely around existing underground and overhead utilities.
- Read and follow grade stakes, laser levels, project plans, and supervisor instructions.
- Conduct daily pre‑operation and post‑operation inspections of assigned equipment.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance, including fueling, greasing, cleaning, and reporting maintenance needs.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, spotters, truck drivers, survey crews, and other team members to maintain safe operations.
- Follow all OSHA, company, environmental, and project‑specific safety policies and procedures.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
- Assist with general labor and construction duties when equipment operation is not required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 1–3 years of experience operating light construction equipment in civil, utility, or site development projects.
- Experience operating multiple types of light construction equipment.
- Basic understanding of excavation, grading, utility installation, and construction safety practices.
- Ability to read grade stakes, construction drawings, and work instructions.
- Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred.
- Safe operation of light construction equipment.
- Excavation and trenching support.
- Fine grading and material placement.
- Utility installation support.
- Equipment inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Grade stake and laser interpretation.
- Communication and teamwork.

- Strong commitment to safety.
- Ability to climb into and out of equipment repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work on uneven terrain.
- Ability to perform manual labor when required.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and travel to project sites as needed.
- Outdoor construction environments with exposure to dust, mud, noise, vibration, heavy equipment, and changing weather conditions.
- Frequent work around excavation activities, utility installations, road construction, and active construction traffic.
- Travel to multiple project locations may be required.
- OSHA 10‑Hour or OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Certification
- Competent Person – Excavation and Trenching (preferred)
- Traffic Control/Flagger Certification (preferred)
