Heavy Civil Superintendent
Job Summary:The Heavy Civil Superintendent is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising all field operations on heavy civil construction projects. This role oversees project execution from mobilization through completion, ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with project specifications and quality standards. The Heavy Civil Superintendent provides leadership to field personnel, subcontractors, and equipment operators while maintaining strong communication with project managers, owners, engineers, and inspectors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Lead all day-to-day field operations for heavy civil construction projects.
- Plan and coordinate construction activities to meet project schedules and milestones.
- Supervise foremen, operators, laborers, subcontractors, and field personnel.
- Manage earthwork, excavation, grading, underground utilities, concrete structures, roadway construction, drainage systems, and site development activities.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, contracts, and project schedules to ensure work is performed according to project requirements.
- Coordinate equipment, materials, labor, and subcontractors to maximize efficiency and productivity.
- Conduct daily jobsite meetings and communicate project expectations to field crews.
- Enforce all OSHA, company, environmental, and client safety requirements.
- Perform routine jobsite inspections to ensure compliance with quality control standards.
- Monitor production rates, labor costs, equipment utilization, and project progress.
- Identify and resolve field issues that may impact project schedule or budget.
- Coordinate with survey crews to verify layout, elevations, grades, and project control points.
- Manage utility conflicts and coordinate with utility owners and inspectors.
- Maintain daily reports, production logs, equipment reports, safety documentation, and project records.
- Review and approve subcontractor work for compliance with project specifications.
- Participate in project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordination meetings.
- Assist with change orders, project forecasting, and resource planning.
- Mentor and develop foremen and field personnel to improve performance and leadership.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 7–10 years of heavy civil construction experience.
- Minimum of 3–5 years in a superintendent or field leadership role.
- Experience managing multiple phases of heavy civil infrastructure projects.
- Strong knowledge of earthwork, excavation, utilities, concrete, roadway construction, grading, drainage, and site development.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, grading plans, and construction contracts.
- Knowledge of GPS machine control, surveying, and layout procedures preferred.
- Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred.
