Under immediate supervision, responsible for professional industrial hygiene inspection work of routine difficulty and performs related work as required. Entry‑level class in the Industrial Hygienist sub‑series. Learns to perform routine safety and health inspections in compliance with Tennessee OSHA (TOSHA) regulations. Differentiated from Industrial Hygienist II in that the latter performs at a working level.

• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in safety, industrial engineering, industrial hygiene, chemistry, biology, physical science, environmental health, or other related field.
• OR an associate degree in safety, industrial engineering, industrial hygiene, chemistry, biology, physical science, environmental health or other related field and two or more years of direct environmental, safety and health experience.
• Valid vehicle operator's license.

• Learns to handle complaints, settle disputes, and resolve grievances and conflicts; provides guidance on a broad range of technical issues across public and private sector facilities to support regulatory compliance.
• Develops effective communication through written correspondence, phone conversations, and in‑person interactions; gains proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and agency‑specific systems for managing case files, tracking inspections, and generating reports.
• Conducts workplace inspections of varying complexity to identify hazards and potential safety or health violations; prioritizes work to meet deadlines and established goals, performs administrative tasks, and participates in staff meetings and training sessions.
• Gathers and evaluates relevant information to assess whether workplace events or processes comply with applicable laws, regulations, or standards, and determines violations or non‑violations.
• Researches and reviews printed and electronic documents to gain knowledge of occupational safety/health standards; stays current in occupational and safety health trends.
• Applies proper use of industrial hygiene and safety equipment during inspections; ensures correct selection, operation, maintenance, and calibration of instruments and verifies sampling techniques to obtain accurate field data.
• Promotes and markets the On‑Site Consultation Program to encourage voluntary compliance and improve workplace safety.
• Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission and operations of the division.
