this is the first of nine levels in the police series. Incumbents attend the police academy, complete required training, and receive their peace officer certification.

starting salary: $47,480
after completion of the police academy salary will be: $49,855

specific duties and responsibilities
essential functions:
  • attends the police academy, which includes completing required training and academy courses, receiving peace officer certification, and performing related duties.
  • may assist police officers with daily assignments, which could include ride-alongs, apprehending suspects, observing violations, making arrests, transmitting radio messages, monitoring electronic surveillance, retrieving, and filing information, assisting with fingerprinting, and performing related duties.
  • performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • performs other related work as required.

  • high school diploma or ged equivalent.

  • a valid driver's license.
residence requirements
  • must reside within a sixty (60) minute drive time (obeying all traffic laws) to police headquarters at 135 commerce street upon completion of the field-training program.

physical requirements:
the work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
  • balancing: maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • climbing: ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
