Summary

This position is located in the Primary Care Clinic at the Clarksville Outpatient Clinic in Clarksville, TN.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • English Language Proficiency:
    Proficiency in basic written and spoken English required per 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency, accredited by ACEN or CCNE.
  • Individuals in a master’s level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s degree may become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program.
  • Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on a temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment after successful completion and graduation from the bridge program.
  • Reference VA Handbook 5005 – Appendix G6.
  • Foreign nursing graduates:
    Possession of a current full active unrestricted registration from a State, Territory or Commonwealth (or District of Columbia) and formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception:
    Candidates may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120‑day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case‑by‑case basis).
  • Grandfathering Provision:
    All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held.
  • Grade Determinations:
    Scope, Education and Dimension criteria must be met for grade assignment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform work requiring regular and recurrent bending, lifting 30 pounds or more, stooping, climbing, twisting, standing and walking almost constantly, reaching above the shoulder, stretching, and supporting various weights.
  • Walking and standing for 8 hours.
  • Frequent pushing of medication carts, wheelchairs, litters, beds.
  • Use of fingers – both hands and both legs.
  • Emotional stability to care for Veterans with various medical and psychiatric illnesses who may exhibit unpredictable, potentially physically or verbally assaultive behavior.
  • Near‑vision correctable at 13–16 inches; far‑vision correctable to 20/50 in one eye and 20/100 in the other, with the ability to distinguish basic colors.
  • Hearing aid permitted to sufficiently hear various alarms and respond immediately.
Duties
  • RN Pay Scale NY48:
    Notes to VA Employees that grades and steps will be unaffected by this change but may result in a salary change due to different pay scales.
  • Improve care for primary care teams by offering complex Veterans at highest risk for adverse outcomes.
  • Provide best care for vulnerable Veterans – adults with a variety of conditions.
  • Direct non‑professional staff in lifting, moving, and transferring patients and use equipment that involves lifting or pushing.
  • Responsible for the storage, proper cleaning, and use of reusable medical equipment (RME).
  • Carry out proper procedures for caring for patients in isolation following infection control procedures.
  • Communicate regularly with nurse managers, physicians, nursing supervisors, charge nurses, transfer coordinators, allied healthcare staff, technicians, pharmacy, and the business office.
  • Establish nursing diagnoses.
  • Provide health education and procedural teaching to patients and significant others.
  • Administer and evaluate pharmacological and other therapeutic treatment regimens.
