Position SummaryContinental Expedited Services (CES) seeks an experienced Fleet Mechanic to support the safety, reliability, and readiness of our tractor and trailer fleet. This hands-on position is responsible for preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and breakdown support to help keep equipment operating safely and minimize fleet downtime.
The Fleet Mechanic will perform a wide range of diesel and heavy-duty equipment repairs that can be effectively completed in-house, while working closely with the Fleet Coordinator to prioritize equipment needs and identify repairs that should be routed to outside vendors.
The role works closely with the Fleet Coordinator to manage the daily equipment queue, document labor, parts, and repair findings, and identify work that should be routed to an outside vendor. Safety, repair quality, accurate documentation, and timely return-to-service are key expectations of the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on tractors and trailers, including lubrication, filters, fluids, inspections, and other required services.
- Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using fault codes, telematics, diagnostic software, service literature, and hands-on troubleshooting.
- Repair and service diesel engines and related systems, including aftertreatment, air and brake systems, electrical systems, HVAC, drivetrain, suspension, steering, tires, wheel ends, and trailer components.
- Perform annual DOT inspections and required brake and safety-system repairs.
- Complete repairs efficiently while maintaining high standards for workmanship and minimizing repeat failures or rework.
- Road test equipment following repairs and verifying that reported concerns have been resolved before returning units to service.
- Maintain accurate work orders documenting the complaint, cause, correction, parts used, labor hours, and equipment downtime.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair history for fleet equipment.
- Prepare newly onboarded or unassigned equipment for driver placement by inspecting, repairing, and confirming units are road ready.
- Assist with roadside breakdowns and perform mobile repairs when practical and safe.
- Assist with towing and recovery of disabled or abandoned company equipment when conditions, equipment, and applicable regulations allow.
- Participate in an agreed-upon after-hours breakdown and recovery rotation.
- Maintain tools, equipment, parts, and shop areas in safe and orderly condition.
- Properly handle fluids, chemicals, waste materials, cores, and defective parts.
- Identify recurring equipment failures and communicate repair trends or recommendations to fleet leadership.
- Provide realistic repair timelines and promptly communicate conditions that may require outside vendor support.
- Work collaboratively with Operations, Safety & Compliance, drivers, and other departments to support fleet readiness.
- Perform all work in accordance with OSHA requirements, DOT regulations, company safety policies, and established maintenance procedures.
- Never release equipment that is unsafe or not legally compliant for operation.
- Previous experience as a diesel mechanic, fleet mechanic, heavy-duty truck technician, or similar position strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines and commercial tractor and trailer systems.
- Experience diagnosing and repairing air brakes, electrical systems, suspension, steering, drivetrain, HVAC, aftertreatment, wheel-end, and trailer systems.
- Ability to use diagnostic software, fault codes, service manuals, and electronic troubleshooting tools.
- Knowledge of DOT inspection and commercial vehicle safety requirements.
- Ability to independently diagnose mechanical problems and determine an appropriate repair approach.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to accurately document repairs, labor hours, parts usage, and maintenance activity.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to communicate effectively with drivers, fleet personnel, operations, vendors, and leadership.
