As a Corrections Officer, you will utilize and develop a multitude of skills while being responsible for maintaining security and order within the correctional facility. This role provides public safety and involves supervising inmates, enforcing rules and regulations, and ensuring a safe environment for both staff and incarcerated individuals.

St. Louis County offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid medical insurance, 20 days of PTO in the first year with increases for seniority, 11‑12 paid holidays, 480 hours of paid parental leave, a robust wellness plan, paid life insurance, credit union, 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, pre‑tax premium pay plan, dependent care and medical expense reimbursement plans, and short and long‑term disability insurance.

Starting base pay is $21.15 per hour ($43,992 annually). An additional 10% differential is paid for evening or night shifts.

• Security Management: Monitor and control inmate activities, ensuring adherence to facility rules and preventing contraband.
• Inmate Supervision: Oversee daily inmate activities, including meals, recreation, and work assignments, while providing guidance and maintaining authority.
• Incident Response: Respond promptly to emergencies or disturbances using de‑escalation techniques and enforce protocols.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate records of inmate behavior, incidents, and daily activities, and prepare reports as required.
• Communication: Interact with inmates, staff, and visitors respectfully and facilitate effective communication.
• Safety Protocols: Implement and follow safety procedures, participate in training and drills, and stay current on best practices.

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• Clear police record with no felony convictions; misdemeanors must be approved by the Director of Justice Services.

• Strong interpersonal skills and calm handling of stressful situations.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the job, including extensive standing, walking, climbing stairs, and handling emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, AEDs, and tasers.
• Excellent observational skills and attention to detail with the ability to write accurate reports.
• Willingness to work mandatory overtime and any shift, including weekends and holidays.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Valid driver’s license required for some positions.

Applicants will be evaluated by a selection committee based on education, experience, supplemental questions, reference investigations, and other relevant information. Candidates must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interviews and tests to be considered for appointment. Successful applicants will undergo background screening and a mandatory urinalysis for drug screening, the cost of which is covered by the County.
