Job Description

Reports To: Principal

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • A. Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of lessons; gets the class started quickly; maintains high student time‑on‑task.
  • B. Management of Student Behavior: Established rules and procedures for routine matters, verbal participation, movement. Frequently monitors behavior, stops inappropriate behavior promptly, maintains dignity.
  • C. Instructional Presentation: Begins lesson with review, introduces objectives, speaks fluently, presents concepts in understandable language, provides examples, assigns tasks, asks questions, conducts lessons briskly, manages transitions, summarizes main points.
  • D. Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Maintains work standards, circulates during class, checks performance, uses oral, written work, poses clear questions.
  • E. Instructional Feedback: Provides feedback on in‑class work, prompt out‑of‑class feedback, affirms correct responses, provides sustaining feedback after incorrect responses.
  • F. Facilitating Instruction: Has instructional plan aligned with curricular goals, uses diagnostic information, maintains records, matches objectives, uses resources.
  • G. Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, community.
  • H. Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: Carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, follows laws and policies, demonstrates professional development growth.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or a related area qualifying for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
