Position: Teacher Assistant GC (HQ)

Job Opportunity

Johnston County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Teacher Assistant/Bus Driver for the school year 26-27. This position reports to the Principal and is based at West Clayton ES for a 9-month term.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent. To be considered highly qualified, candidates must meet one of the following criteria: hold a 2 or 4 year degree, complete 48 semester hours, or complete the Pathways to TA Class and pass the Work Keys Test. Additionally, candidates should have a working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children and the ability to solve minor problems and follow detailed instructions.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Academic Assistance:
    Give group instruction as prescribed by teacher; provide individualized instruction, demonstrate various instructional activities, check and correct students' work, praise and reinforce student achievement, and report student progress to the teacher.
  • Instructional Preparation/Support:
    Arrange classroom furnishings and equipment, prepare visual aids and duplicate materials, reorganize materials at the end of the day, serve as proctor during testing, attend workshops.
  • Report and Records:
    Check and report attendance, enter data in health records, record student behavior, and file data according to regulatory requirements.
  • Monitoring Student Behavior:
    Supervise students in the classroom and other locations, create and distribute awards for positive behavior, promote student self-esteem, teach citizenship, social skills, and respect for others, reconcile minor student conflicts, participate in development of discipline and policy, discipline misbehavior through approved methods, report discipline problems to teacher or principal, report significant changes in student behavior.
  • Duty to Drive a Bus/Sub Bus Driver/Bus Monitor/Sub Bus Monitor:
    Serve as a Bus Driver/Sub Bus Driver/Bus Monitor/Sub Bus Monitor for a school bus or activity bus as required by the principal. Must have all qualifications prescribed by the State Board of Education and maintain appropriate bus driver certification at all times. Perform other duties and accept responsibilities as assigned.

Physical requirements include the ability to communicate orally and in writing with parents, staff, and community leaders, and the ability to physically perform basic life operational functions such as fingering, grasping, kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
