The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a School Resource Officer for our Clayton Police Department
. The Town of Clayton employs more than 340 full‑time staff in areas including police, fire, and electric utilities. The Town of Clayton also offers a range of PT positions including positions in Parks & Rec, Library, and Cultural Arts. The School Resource Officer is in the Police Department and reports to the Police Sergeant and or Police Lieutenant.

The purpose of this position is to perform a full range of general law enforcement duties within the high school, middle schools, and elementary schools.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol’s school campus in patrol car, on foot, by bicycle or other appropriate means; interacts with students, parents, faculty and school administrators.
  • Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior, and other needs; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted. Communicates with school officials and police department staff.
  • Investigates traffic accidents on campus; issues traffic citations; directs traffic and participates in other emergency operation activities.
  • Performs investigations of possible crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; performs investigative tasks; arrests and processes criminal suspects.
  • Advise the public on laws and local ordinances; testifies in court; execute search warrants; serve papers as needed.
  • Regulate and direct vehicular traffic at busy times or when traffic signal malfunctions or accidents require; maintain order at public gatherings.
  • Perform and coordinate security at school related events.
  • Operate a two‑way radio to receive instructions and information from or to report information to police headquarters. Carries a department issued cellular phone.
  • Perform other law enforcement duties at the request and direction of supervisors and police department command staff.

A normal schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week within a Monday‑Friday timeframe (specific times set by supervisor). Subject to call back work on nights, weekends and holidays as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Competencies
  • Individual in this position should possess thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances and policies of the police department, especially relating to arrest, search and seizure, and traffic control.
  • Some knowledge of scientific criminal detection and identification methods.
  • Individual should possess the ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective relations with the citizens, coworkers, other law enforcement agencies, and Town officials.
  • Ability to communicate clearly over radio and technology; ability to act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
  • Ability to present effective court testimony.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise activity reports.
  • Individual in this position should possess the skill in the use of firearms and other police equipment and in the application of self‑defense tactics and possess skills in collaborative conflict resolution.
