A Field Calibration Technician ensures the operation and maintenance of measurement equipment and procedures at various customer locations. The technician performs routine and complex work related to the repair and calibration of optical measuring systems, 3‑axis video measuring systems (manual and CNC), and mechanical testing equipment using specialized tools and procedures. The role requires independent work with minimal supervision while providing exceptional customer service.
Job Responsibilities- Calibration of optical comparators, vision systems, hardness testers, granite surface plates, and related equipment.
- Interface with customers to facilitate their calibration requirements.
- Frequent travel, including nearby and distance trips: many locations are within driving distance; some overnight travel is required, estimated at 20%.
- Perform calibrations, modifications, diagnostics, and repairs on various test and measurement equipment.
- Replace or repair defective components to secure client‑focused solutions.
- Communicate with operational staff and customers to determine needs in repairs, alignments, technical assistance, and other concerns.
- Assist in training new technicians.
- Maintain technical proficiency through on‑the‑job training and self‑study, and learn other calibration methods as needed.
- Accurately and efficiently complete necessary documentation and reports.
- Assist operational staff to maintain a high level of customer interaction and satisfaction.
- Develop calibration procedures and measurement systems for customers’ equipment in compliance with quality requirements.
- Assure compliance with internal quality systems and perform quality assurance functions to ensure calibration reports meet customer requirements.
- Verify all laboratory standards/test equipment are within calibration dates prior to use.
- Ensure all customer‑owned equipment is serviced and returned within the promised turnaround time.
- Coordinate with operational staff regarding the status of customer equipment, lab personnel, and any problems during calibration.
- Perform other laboratory support functions to support efficient and orderly facility operation.
- Use standard hand tools, measurement and test equipment, computers, material handling devices, and common office and electronic test equipment.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Higher education coursework in related fields (optical engineering, electronics, metrology, etc.) preferred.
- Experience in a laboratory setting or with electronics within the metrology industry preferred.
- Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
- High level math skills.
- Sharp hand‑eye coordination.
- Excellent communication skills and confidence speaking with internal and external customers.
- Familiarity with electronic measurement equipment.
- Technical training and experience in metrology, electronics, or a related field.
- Good time management.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data.
- Ability to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Physically capable of moving heavy lapping plates repeatedly.
- Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts to practical situations.
