Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has openings for a Tooling/Principal Tooling Engineer Level 2/3 to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position is located in Clearfield, Utah.

This position will support the A Shift: Mon – Thur, 6:30 AM – 4:00 PM; every other Friday 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM. The schedule is approximate and includes a 30‑minute unpaid lunch break.

Our team supports design and integration of tooling to support aerospace composite part fabrication, handling, and assembly for the commercial and defense aerospace industries. Engineers get the opportunity to manage their work from design concept through implementation. Our Tooling Team works independently but interacts closely with safety, engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers to achieve expectations.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Manages and supports integration of new tooling from design through sustainment
  • Supervises and supports critical production builds involving technical tooling processes
  • Provides communication to Integrated Product Team (IPT) leaders regarding cost and schedule, including escalation of any technical issues
  • Works intimately with Manufacturing engineering to deliver tools that meet product build requirements
  • Recommends and often leads continuous improvement activities to support cost savings and cost avoidance targets
  • Manages external Tooling Design/Fabrication Shops on Design/Build projects
  • Proofs tooling upon receipt in a production environment
  • Uses Microsoft applications to communicate and present tooling progress
Secondary Responsibilities
  • Supports the tool design group with design projects and tasks, including 3D modeling, 2D drafting, and checking
  • Concepts and designs special tooling within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) structure
  • Uses and/or manages Computer Aided Design (CAD) resources for tooling design (primarily NX)
  • Witnesses/approves source inspection of special tooling at supplier locations before acceptance
  • Provides tooling cost/schedule estimates for new tools and or tooling modifications
Tooling Engineer (Level
2)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance and the ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access within a reasonable period of time as determined by the needs of the business
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline and a minimum of 1 year of relevant engineering experience; or Master’s Degree in STEM discipline and 0 years of engineering experience
  • Experience in design, fabrication and implementation of tooling used in the manufacture of composite parts
  • Experience with project management and communication skills
  • Experience with general metallic fabrication including welding and machining
  • Experience with 3D CAD systems
  • Experience with creating free‑body diagrams and analyzing tooling for allowable stress and fatigue
Principal Tooling Engineer (Level
3)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance and the ability to obtain and maintain Special Program Access within a reasonable period of time as determined by the needs of the business
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline and a minimum of 4 years relevant engineering experience; or Master’s Degree in STEM and 3 years’ engineering experience; or PhD and 0 years of engineering experience
  • Experience in design, fabrication and implementation of tooling used in the manufacture of composite parts
