Reporting to this position Respiratory Therapist Assistants (if utilized)

Job Classification Department Staff

Position Purpose Leads, guides and directs the delivery of respiratory therapy services in the facility in accordance with local, state and federal regulations, standards and established facility policies and procedures to provide appropriate care and services to residents.

PRN Variable shifts nights 6p-6a/shift can fluctuate

Required Qualifications

The Respiratory Therapist must possess:

  • A valid, unrestricted license in his/her therapy discipline in the state.
  • Valid driver’s license in the state of employment.
  • Knowledgeable of skilled nursing home regulations, procedures, laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to long-term care.
  • 3+ years of Respiratory Therapy experience
  • Completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy Education Program(add additional educational or certified specifications as needed)
  • Licensure or certifications required by the position such as ACLS, BLS, PALS, CRT, etc.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates and directs the delivery of respiratory therapy services as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with current state and federal laws and regulations; and respectivepractice act(s) in the state.
  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and directs the execution of respiratory therapy services in accordance with physician’s orders and American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC)(or other associations) in accordance with guidelines issued by the governing body and its respective affiliate state chapter.
  • Coordinates the achievement and reporting of the facility’s key performance respiratory therapy indicators.
  • Establishes an ongoing system to monitor these key indicators.
  • Evaluates and reports key performance indicator outcomes of the respiratory therapy department to the rehabilitation director to determine the need for action such as re-education or revisions related to the facility’s outcomes, regulatory compliance, practice act(s) and/or customer satisfaction.
  • Develops and implements processes and systems to effectively lead, guide and direct the delivery of respiratory therapy services including but not limited to processes for the evaluation, initiation, maintenance, and discontinuation of treatment, discharge and all associated documentation requirements for residents in the facility.
  • Complies with facility policies and procedures for appropriately documenting, billing and coding for residents receiving respiratory therapy.
  • Provides resident information needed for the accurate coding of the resident assessment instrument according to facility policy such as during the defined observation period(s).
  • Ensures respiratory therapy equipment and supplies is stored, used and sanitized, disinfected and/or cleaned properly and safely in the facility. This includes ensuring adequate supplies of clean, calibrated equipment and disposable supplies.
  • Initiates and monitors ventilator support including equipment monitoring, if utilized in the facility.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and safety testing of equipment and reports issues as appropriate.
  • Assess, treats, and educates residents with cardiopulmonary impairments as directed by the practitioner.
  • Administers respiratory treatments and oxygen therapy modalities as per their scope of practice, the practitioner’s orders/protocol, and current facility policy.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of contemporary Respiratory Therapy principles.
  • Participates in daily, weekly, and/or monthly rehabilitative and interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss residents’ therapy progression in relation to discharge planning for residents receiving respiratory therapy services as designated by the Rehabilitation Director.
