Utility Maintenance Specialist I​/II​/Senior

This recruitment may be filled at the Utility Maintenance Specialist I, II, or Senior level. Applicants will be considered for the highest classification for which they meet the minimum qualifications.

• Utility Maintenance Specialist I: $20.79 - $22.87/hr high school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in construction, maintenance, or repair of public works infrastructure (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). CDL with endorsements required within six (6) months of hire.
• Utility Maintenance Specialist II: $22.92 - $25.21/hr high school diploma or equivalent, Level IV Water Distribution System Operator certification, and three (3) years of experience in construction, maintenance, or repair of water distribution or sewer collection systems (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). Must possess a valid CDL with endorsements at time of hire.
• Senior Utility Maintenance Specialist: $26.53 - $29.18/hr high school diploma or equivalent, two qualifying certifications, and five (5) years of experience in construction, maintenance, or repair of water distribution or sewer collection systems (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). Performs a variety of lead worker and journey-level skilled duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of the city utility service system including streets, water transmission and distribution, and wastewater collection.

Works under the direct supervision of the Street/Utility Superintendent, and the close general supervision of the Street/Utility Maintenance Foreman.

May oversee Utility Maintenance Specialist I, temporary, seasonal and part-time laborers while in training or on a project-by-project basis. May function as a lead worker by assignment.

• Serve as a lead worker and/or project leader; make decisions related to procedures and processes as related to specific job sites; perform troubleshooting as directed.

Instill the importance of communication and working together as a team.
• Receive daily assignments; take assigned equipment, materials and manpower to the appropriate site and complete the project as directed by the Street/Utility Superintendent or Street/Utility Maintenance Foreman.
• Ensure proper work site safety procedures are being followed; use and wear appropriate safety equipment, set up barricades, safety signs and signal equipment; may perform flagging assignments to assure work zone safety; attend scheduled safety training classes.

Perform, train, and instruct employees in proper maintenance techniques and procedures for various street projects, such as asphalt hot and cold mix, patching, storm drain maintenance/repairs and construction, grading, road base spreading, ice/snow control.

Instruct employees in the proper operation and maintenance of heavy equipment: train operators in proper safety practices; oversee the setup of traffic control and safety devices according to established uniform codes and standards.

Operate heavy equipment such as single and tandem axle dump trucks, front‑end loaders, backhoes, bucket trucks, snowplows, street sweepers, asphalt/concrete saws and other similar equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of various street projects and sites.

Operate trucks, snowplows and sanders in hauling, plowing, and cleaning streets; perform cement work on flat surfaces, curbs and gutters; grouts surfaces and joints; perform a variety of street maintenance projects and road work; patch chip holes, transport road materials; maintain roadways.

Transport and deposit various construction materials such as sand, salt, gravel, dirt, bitumen, etc.; perform hot mix patching, storm drain cleaning, repair and construction, snow and ice control, gravel street maintenance,…
