Calpine Corporation seeks an experienced Electrical Engineer III to support reliable, lower-carbon power generation across its natural gas and geothermal fleet. In this role, you will design, analyze, and optimize plant electrical systems, including high, medium, and low voltage equipment, protection and control schemes, and grid interconnections. You will perform power system studies, troubleshoot complex issues, and lead improvements that enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency.

Partnering closely with operations, maintenance, and project teams, you will develop technical specifications, support capital projects from concept through commissioning, and ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, NERC, and corporate standards. This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to cleaner energy, grid reliability, and continuous improvement in a data-driven, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and optimize electrical systems for natural gas and geothermal power plants
  • Perform system studies, load flow, short-circuit, and protection coordination analyses
  • Support plant operations with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and reliability improvements
  • Develop specifications, drawings, and technical documents for equipment and upgrades
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and project teams to ensure safe, reliable generation
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, NERC, and other applicable codes and standards
  • Lead or support capital projects from concept through commissioning
  • Analyze performance data to drive efficiency, reliability, and cost improvements
  • Support grid interconnection studies and protection schemes
  • Champion safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement initiatives

Required Skills

  • Power systems analysis (load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination)
  • High/medium/low voltage equipment design and specification
  • Protection and control systems
  • Plant electrical troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • ETAP/SKM or similar analysis tools
  • Understanding of NEC, IEEE, and NERC standards
  • Project engineering and technical documentation
  • SCADA and switch gear systems familiarity
  • Arc flash and grounding studies
  • Data analysis for reliability and performance improvement
